Youth Development Specialist

Greater Miami Service Corps is seeking two Youth Development Specialists for two locations, Leisure City and Florida City. English/Spanish and English/Creole preferred.

Nature of Work:

This is responsible social services management position in casework, assessment, job development, and management activities for out of school youth.

Employees in this class provide professional supervision over program participants who are engaged in the out of school youth program. Responsibilities include recruitment, assessment, and referral activities tracking and monitoring of program participants' progress, intakes, counseling, orientations, assessments, education, and all other functions related to the supervision of participant activities.

Supervision is received from the Education and Training Coordinator or Program Director who evaluates quality of results through personal conferences and analysis of records and monthly activity reports.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Develops a comprehensive recruitment plan to recruit out-of-school youth for possible entry into the program; performs regular outreach and follow-up with a broad network of applicable referral sources to ensure the recruitment of a diverse pool of applicants.

Supervises all aspects of participants’ progress throughout the program to include but not limited to overseeing the accurate and timely documentation of services provided to participants and monitors participant flow throughout the program.

Plans, assigns, schedules, and conducts individual orientations for Potential participants to provide relevant program information, labor market information, and possible resources for participants.

Plans, assigns, schedules, and conducts group orientations for potential participants to present visual and informational materials regarding program.

Assists participants and Eligibility Interviewer in obtaining required documentation for services and/or entry into the program.

Conducts individual intake(s) for eligible participants; coordinates participant hiring with personnel and program staff.

Provides on-going counseling, on an individual and group basis, to address participants' needs and facilitate progress within the program.

Completes Monthly Activity reports on a timely and accurate basis; responsible for gathering accurate data from other staff to complete reports and maintain participants, case files.

Supervises, motivates and coordinates a team of young adults in a rigorous program of service, education and training; maintains discipline and builds team work.

Supervises and manages youth in completion of service projects such as renovation of parks, dilapidated housing and community facilities, or direct delivery of services to the elderly and disabled.

Ensures safe work practices for program participants to include proper use and maintenance of tools, vehicles and equipment.

Serves as on-site liaison with agencies sponsoring service projects.

Prepares reports of service projects, participant evaluations, incident reports, and participant attendance, participation and work hours.

Conducts regular team and individual meetings to discuss participant progress; counsels, motivates and disciplines individual participants as required.

Acts as a referral source for Supportive services to participants; maintains linkages to other service providers, assists Participant(s) in accessing services.

Assists Program Director and Executive Director with implementation of special projects/activities for participants.

Works to coordinate requisite training required for compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

Coordinates services for participants as required with other service delivery agencies.

Develops goal plans for addressing participants' educational and vocational needs with other staff; assists in developing and conducting weekly Life Skills workshops.

Coordinates educational and vocational assessments for participants with other staff.

Attends all meetings, conferences, workshops, etc. as required.

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Ability to supervise and motivate young adults.

Strong attention to detail and follow-up.

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Knowledge of various public and private community resources available for participants' needs.

Above average interpersonal skills; ability to make presentations to groups.

Knowledge of counseling techniques.

Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Excellent interviewing techniques.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Human Relations, Social Work, or related field.

Experience: Minimum of three years of experience working directly with youth in job placement, career development, recruitment, or social work program. Proven track record of record-keeping and maintaining case files. Ability to implement quality, innovative programming for youth.

  • Weekends as needed

Education:

  • Bachelor's (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Youth and young adult: 2 years (Preferred)
  • Childcare: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
