Job description

Summary of Position:

Full-time position, 40 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends.

Creates and produces children's programming for youth, ages preschool through early elementary grades, throughout the year under general supervision of the head of the Youth Services department. Assists with periodic programming for parents. Assists with other department duties as assigned.

Plans, develops, and presents weekly story hours and programs on a regular basis throughout the year including daytimes, evenings, and weekends as determined beneficial to the community. Plans, develops, and presents special event and seasonal children's programming as guided by the Head of Youth Services. Cooperates with other community organizations in planning and promoting youth programs. Assists with periodic programming for parents to promote the importance of literacy skills and library usage habits. Coordinates scheduled activities within the overall library operation so as not to conflict with other functions. Presents in classrooms and for clubs and organizations to promote literacy and children's library services, as time permits. Assists in conducting tours of the Children's Library.
Assists with reference and readers' advisory services to satisfy the informational, educational, and recreational needs of area youth. Assists the Head of Youth Services in encouraging and motivating volunteers to help with department programming. Keeps informed of children's literature and trends. Assists in marketing library print and electronic resources to children and parents. Assists the head of the department in handling public relations for programming.

Participates in professional development and Leadership Team meetings. Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four-year college degree required. Two years of satisfactory work experience with children or teens (equivalent life experiences).

Must affirm and uphold the Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement (American Library Association, first published 1953), and oppose efforts to censor or remove material from the library.
Must carry oneself with an attitude of professionalism and integrity with all library stakeholders, including the general public and fellow library employees.
Must be willing and able to develop self-potential as beneficial to the Library and the community.
Must be willing to represent the Library at relevant professional or community meetings when required.
Must be able to adapt to flexible scheduling, including evenings and periodic weekends.
Must be able to work under busy conditions that may cause stress.
Must adhere to the library's Dress Code Policy and maintain proper personal hygiene.
