Youth Services Coordinator

Overview
Enthusiastic, positive, organized, motivated, and high-energy professional wanted for a unique position with Alexandria's Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Service Unit (CSU). Under the supervision of the Crime Prevention Program Manager, the Youth Services Coordinator will provide crime prevention and intervention services for at-risk, culturally diverse male and female youth, generally between the ages of 10-15 based on the needs of the Alexandria community.
This position requires a non-traditional work schedule, generally daytime hours on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30-5 and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12-8:30 p.m., at least on Saturday per month, and occasional Sundays for weekend-long events, approximately two-three times per year.

The ideal candidate will bring passion, creative problem-solving abilities, and outstanding collaboration and communication skills. General knowledge of local service agencies and organizations, and best practices in mentoring, is preferred. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, agency representatives, coworkers, and supervisors is essential. The ideal applicant will have direct experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds, enjoy youth, arts, and recreational activities, and have experience managing behaviors of individuals and groups of youth with emotional and behavioral challenges.
The Opportunity
  • Support development, implementation, and expansion of youth crime prevention programs.
  • Manage Space of Her Own mentoring programs, including screening, training, and supervision of 5th-grade girls and volunteer mentors, and coordinating all aspects of the program including weekly programming, life skills classes, family nights, room transformation weekends, and community events.
  • Plan and implement monthly SOHO Club events for middle schoolers and their mentors, building long-term mentoring relationships, community engagement, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) skills.
  • Advocate for youth and families, assisting them in meeting social, educational, employment, childcare, housing, medical, and recreational needs.
  • Conduct fieldwork that includes school visits to meet with youth and/or school staff and community visits to businesses and recreation centers.
  • Collect client data, make timely entries in various databases to fulfill Court and grant requirements, and conduct program evaluation measurements.
  • Prepare and submit written progress reports, as needed.
  • Represent CSU at meetings and serve on City committees/task forces relating to youth issues, which may include the Alexandria Mentoring Partnership and/or Youth Services Coordinating Council.

About the Department
The Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court Service Unit is made up of a dedicated team of professionals working to support the strategic direction of the City government through the commitment to excellence in Public Safety by providing effective preventions and interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities.

Four Year College Degree; completion of college-level courses in sociology, psychology, counseling, education, criminal justice, or other human services field. Some experience in evaluating youth problems and a familiarity with current trends and practices employed in the Juvenile Justice System. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Successful experience with developing, implementing, managing and evaluating programs, planning events, and managing youth and volunteers. Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.
Court Service Unit pre-employment screening includes: FBI records check, Drug Screen, Driver's record check, and VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry check.
