Job Summary: Performs a variety of duties under the direction of the Youth Services Manager as it relates to providing direct service to all branch customers, with a special focus on youth (ages birth to 18); member of the Youth Service Team.

- Provides a consistently high level of service by assisting with requests or locating appropriate resources for the request.
- Works collaboratively across CCPL departments to conduct joint programming.
- Plans, prepares, and implements age-appropriate programs for youth.
- Provides reference and reader's advisory services.
- Maintains confidentiality of customers and their personal information.
- Maintains orderliness of collection and neatness of public areas.
- Instructs customers on the use of materials and equipment.
- Creates displays and makes suggestions for interactive learning and development or engagement activities.
- Collects and maintains statistics.
- Promotes library services and activities.
- May prepare flyers or other publicity across multiple digital platforms to promote library services and resources.
- Conducts tours and orientations as necessary.
- Works with volunteers, as assigned.
- Performs circulation tasks, including shelving, checkouts, issuing cards, renewals, and holds.
- Works at different locations throughout the CCPL system as needed.
- Attends meetings and participates in committees and organizations that further the Library's mission and goals.
- Professionally represents the library at community and organizational events that further the Library's mission and goals.
- Fulfills Continuing Education requirements and stays current with Library developments.
- May serve as Librarian-in-charge.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Successfully acts as LIC by following procedures and using appropriate discretion as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The employee is expected to perform or possess the following:
- Ability to gain thorough knowledge of Charles County Public Library's policies and procedures.
- Ability to act as a representative of Charles County Public Library to the public.
- Effective communication and decision-making skills with strong customer focus.
- Ability to master procedures related to reference service in the Library.
- Ability to keep all relevant parties informed of all major issues and to recommend changes as appropriate.
- Demonstrates sound judgment when making decisions.
- Knowledge of electronic resources, including the Internet and database information management.
- Ability to embrace new technology and services as it relates to the job.
- Knowledge of recreational and educational needs of youth.
- Ability to translate youths' needs and interests into effective library services and programs.
- Knowledge of current trends in library services, literature, and other materials for youth
- Understanding of child and teen development techniques.

- Ability to train and supervise volunteers.
- Ability to market Library services in the community.
- Requires the ability to sing, read aloud, and speak publicly to large groups.

Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree; MLS or equivalent for Librarian (Grade 11).
- One year of relevant customer service experience.
- Experience working with youth (ages birth to 18).
- Library Associate Certificate (LATI) or equivalent must be acquired within two years of hire (Grades 9, 10) OR Professional Librarian Certification must be obtained within six months of eligibility, and maintained to comply with Maryland State Department of Education requirements (Grade 11).
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work requires routine physical effort in the handling of moderately heavy materials of up to 40 pounds. Work requires standing for long periods of time and some stooping and bending. Work requires the ability to move about the library to help customers. Work requires dancing, stretching, arm motions and similar vigorous activity.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, libraries, classrooms or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire and building safety regulations.
