Job description

Yeck Artist-in-Residence
Dayton Art Institute is an equal opportunity employer

The Yeck Artist in Residence (AiR) is an opportunity for museum guests, particularly families and children to observe, learn and interact with a professional Artist in DAI’s nationally renowned Lange Family Experiencenter (LFE) gallery. The program provides a paid opportunity for greater Dayton area artists to create original, participatory art projects related to the exhibition This is Us: Framing the Art of Life and meant to engage in-gallery museum guests of all ages. As a participatory and engaging hands-on creative arts experience, this program aims to further families’ and children’s connection to museum spaces, as well as provide artist(s) with an approximately 4-month long residency.
Qualifications
The Yeck Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program is open to professional artists who:
• Are based in the greater Dayton area
• Work in 2D, 3D, and / or multimedia
• Have experience with public exhibition
• Have experience teaching and working with the general public (experience with young learners preferred)
• Have a committed arts practice that celebrates the diversity of our greater Dayton area
Work Schedule
Commit to a total of 180 hours over four (4) months. Time and schedule may fluctuate during the residency but DAI anticipates 65%, or about 100 of these hours to be dedicated ‘Gallery and Studio Hours’ (the in-gallery time creating, demonstrating and engaging guests while the museum is open and time working in the artist’s studio space as needed). Time breakdown is approximately 48 planning hours, 32 daily set-up/cleanup hours and 100 Gallery and Studio Hours, with approximately 64 of those hours being in-gallery and 36 in-studio. In-Studio hours will be used specifically to work with materials or tools not permitted in the gallery and the exact number of in-studio hours will be discussed and approved upon before the Residency begins.
Our Commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility
Dayton Art Institute aspires to develop, promote, and sustain an organizational culture and reputation in the communities that we serve as an organization that values, nurtures and leverages inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in all that we do.
How to Apply
Proposal must also include:
  • 1-2 page narrative description of your idea for an in-gallery participatory artmaking experience. Please explain how your proposal will directly engage museum guests (especially families and children). Detail sketches encouraged.
  • Professional artist resume or CV (include any relevant experience working with families or children)
  • 1 Letter of recommendation highlighting your collaboration skills
  • Relevant artwork samples (no less than 5 images; no smaller than 1 MB each; can be .doc, .docx, .ppt., .pptx., or .jpg)
  • An itemized list of projected materials with costs or list of expenses (does not exceed $4,000)*. Please include specific links to materials needed to be ordered where possible (ex: online art supply store links) and use the Excel sheet format (.xlsx) provided
  • Artistic merit and artist’s vision to align to exhibition on the theme of portraiture, frames, and art connected to everyday living—an exploration of one’s self, family, and community life
No paper or mail applicants will be accepted. Incomplete application materials may not receive full consideration for this opportunity.

All offers are contingent upon a background check that includes a review of conviction history. A conviction does not automatically preclude museum employment. The DAI considers conviction information on a case-by-case basis and assesses the nature of the offense, the circumstances surrounding it, the proximity in time of the conviction, and its relevance to the position.
