Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is looking for a Writer/Editor to join our team supporting the #1 children’s hospital on the West Coast. Experience working in a hospital, university or other health care setting preferred. Bilingual a plus.
Purpose Statement/Position Summary: The Writer/Editor is a key member of the Marketing Communications’ strategic content team. The person in this role will be responsible for promoting CHLA’s image and reputation by crafting impactful content pieces for a variety of owned, paid, earned and social channels. This person will help surface stories and content that furthers the institution’s visibility and reputation, and will help ensure standards of accuracy and excellence in all communications. This person also will collaborate with Marketing Communications colleagues to support the institution’s broader messaging architecture and campaigns through copy development. The Writer/Editor serves as an institutional storyteller by reporting and writing engaging content that is optimized for performance on digital channels (websites, LinkedIn, Facebook, paid ads, paid social) as well as content for broadcast, print and out-of-home mediums.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Minimum three years of paid experience writing about health care, medicine or related topics.
- Experience in an academic medical center, university or other health care setting preferred.
- Excellent reporting and writing skills with the ability to convey complex topics accurately to lay audiences.
- Expertise in writing for digital audiences and platforms, including SEO.
- Familiar with copywriting and UX writing best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence that help drive successful interviews of medical professionals as well as patients and children under stress (trauma-informed approach to interviewing).
- Proficient in using other Microsoft Suite products (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), file-sharing programs such as Box and One Drive, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Willing/able to adopt and learn new technologies and best practices.
- Familiar with AP style and able to adhere to institutional copy standards.
- Understand health literacy and accessibility best practices and apply them to content creation.
- Knowledge of or passion for writing about health care, medicine or research; passion for telling stories and explaining complex topics; basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Familiar with digital asset management platforms, project management platforms, and web content management systems (such as WebDAM, Workfront and Drupal).
- A team player, proactive problem solver and quick learner.
- Self-starter with strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work on several concurrent projects, prioritize multiple tasks across multiple teams, and work quickly with fast turnaround times.
- Able to accept constructive feedback.
- Though position is remote, must be able to travel for in-person interviews and meetings in the Los Angeles area as needed.
- Bilingual a plus.
- Applicants must submit a portfolio of past writing samples.
- Applicants must complete a writing and editing test.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism or related discipline.
- Coursework or additional training or experience in writing and editing for digital platforms, including UX copy and/or performance copywriting.
