Position: Part-time. Sunday morning Musician. Provides piano/keyboard music and accompaniment and song leading for scheduled Sunday morning worship services and special services [as requested]. Occasionally accompanies the choir and special music musicians. Records music for online services as needed. Has a pivotal role in the music ministry of the church, and this individual is collaborative and positive in attitude.
Critical Skills:
- Ability to play hymns, service music, and special music of moderate difficulty.
- Ability to accompany individuals and groups.
- Experience with and basic knowledge of church music.
- Able to play for a blended style of worship and music – traditional to contemporary.
- Able to sight read and play hymns in the UMC Hymnal.
- Able to play traditional and contemporary choral works, following a director.
- Able to play SATB parts for rehearsal.
- Able to lead congregational singing.
- Some training and experience in accompanying.
- Able to work cooperatively and collaboratively.
- Love and respect for all people.
- Sense of humor and a positive attitude.
Supervision: Reports to the Pastor, Director of Music, and Staff Parish Relations music liaison.
Duties:
- Provide appropriate music for the Sunday worship service, including but not limited to: Gathering Music, Prelude, Hymns (selected by pastor or in collaboration), Special Music, Offertory, Communion, Postlude.
- Rehearse with the Chancel Choir at 9:00am and sing with choir at the worship service September-May
- Occasionally to fill in as choir accompanist.
- Record music for online worship services as needed.
- Play for Christmas Eve services.
- Play for other special services such as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
- Occasionally fill in as accompanist for soloists or ensembles.
- Secure own substitute if will be absent.
- Attend Music Team meetings when called.
- Collaborate with pastor, staff, and music team.
- Be adequately prepared and willing to put in the time that is required for expected level of quality for the music.
- Approach the position from the perspective of a worship leader, rather than a performer, and keep in mind the ministerial nature of the position.
Notes
- Weddings and funerals are not included in this job description and are left to the discretion of the musician.
- Accountable to the pastor, the director of music, and the Staff Parish Relations Team.
- Evergreen UMC agrees to provide and maintain a quality piano, keyboard, and organ as well as rehearsal time and space.
- Church musicians may conduct private lessons one day a week using the church’s facilities (as the schedule allows) and instruments at no charge.
