The role:
Join our Wireless Communications Section as aWireless Systems Specialistin Baker City! In this role, you will construct, install, maintain and repair diverse wireless two-way radio and microwave network systems for your assigned service area. You will support and coordinate the communication systems for customers including our agency, Oregon State Police, the Fire Marshall's office and more. This role is similar to radio technician, electronics technician, communications technician, radio service, tower technician, telecommunications specialist, broadcast technologist, radio frequency (RF) signalman, power systems control craftsman and land mobile radio service positions. The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at an information system specialist 5 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for an information system specialist 4($4,741 - $7,170) to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for an information system specialist 5. Underfill training will not exceed three years.

A day in the life:
  • Evaluate situations and resolve questions or customer inquiries.
  • Install, test, replace or repair a variety of cable types.
  • Review customer's operational needs and requests.
  • Identify, prepare and provide on-site training for customers.
  • Manage and coordinate the installation of mobile radio equipment.
  • Identify, diagnose, track and/or report problems and determine repair or replacement priorities.
  • Contact multiple equipment vendors to obtain technical information and request repair or upgrades.
  • Maintain systems and equipment to ensure peak operating condition.
  • Travel to remote mountaintop locations in deep snow and cold weather conditions to repair, install and provide emergency restoration of equipment or systems.
  • Climb and work on towers and antenna structures up to 300 feet above ground and work with high voltages.
  • Considerable region-wide or statewide travel in all weather conditions and time of day required.
  • Move or lift heavy objects excess of 70 pounds following safety procedures.

What we need for an information Systems Specialist 5:
Four (4) years of wireless communications or information systems experience in Wireless Systems (i.e., two-way radio, microwave).
OR
An associate's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND two (2) years of information systems experience in wireless (i.e., two-way radio, microwave) systems.
OR
A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or related field may substitute for all of the above.
What we need for an information Systems Specialist 4 (Underfill Option):
Three (3) years of wireless communications or information systems experience in wireless (i.e., two-way radio, microwave) systems.
OR
An associate's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND one (1) year of information systems experience in Wireless Systems (i.e., two-way radio, microwave).
What we need for both:
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Journeyman level experience in two-way communications maintenance and repairs.
  • Proficient in Land Mobile Radio P25 Trunked and Analog Repeater systems operations.
  • Experience with Analog and IP Radio Dispatch Console Systems.
  • Proven customer service experience and strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and set schedules as well as computer literacy.
