Job description

SEMSA's Med-Express Transport is a non-emergency wheelchair transport service specializing in customer care and comfort. Patients of Med-Express Transport use the service for trips to and from their doctor's office, diagnostic testing centers, outpatient clinics, hospitals or nursing homes. Long distance transports can be arranged to almost anywhere on the West Coast.
All of our Med-Express vans are equipped with a medical radio for immediate contact with SEMSA's state-of-the-art emergency dispatch center. Reclining wheelchairs, breakaway lifts and extra padding are available for added comfort and safety. All of our professional specialists are dedicated to making your transportation experience as safe and comfortable as possible.
Transportation Specialist hourly rate begins at $17.00/hr. DOE.
Qualifications/ Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • A valid Nevada or California Driver's license required
  • A clean driving record required
  • CPR certification within 30 days of employment
  • Able to operate simple computer programs
  • Able to follow driving directions
  • A self-starter that requires little supervision
  • Able to function in a team based structure

Position Accountabilities
SEMSA was established to provide non-emergency Wheelchair Transportation to patients in Washoe County. SEMSA answers to its Board of Directors.
Within this general framework, this position is accountable for the following functions:
This position may require the following duties and responsibilities:
  • The primary duty of everyone at Med-Express is to help people
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, clients, family, co-workers, persons from other agencies, and the public
  • Performance of tasks involving wheel chairs, oxygen tanks, mechanical lifts, and hand trucks
  • Responsible for daily cleaning and stocking of chair vans
  • Responsible for the daily checking of the engine compartments (fluid levels, belts, and hoses)
  • Responsible for filling oxygen cylinders and on-board oxygen systems in wheelchair vans and ambulances
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work environment
  • Perform as "extra-hand" during the transfer of patients or clients to and from chair vans and ambulances
  • Safe operation of chair vans
  • Responsible for the safety of patients and clients during transports
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete transport paperwork
  • Responsible for delivering all patient paperwork in a confidential and orderly manner to dispatch after each shift
  • Performance of other tasks and duties as assigned

Company Computer Use Requirement
It is SEMSA's expectation that all employees in all positions utilize the available company computer systems, including company email. These systems allow management to properly communicate with all employees and provide detailed information in various areas of employment.
Physical Effort/Working Conditions
This individual may be required to perform under adverse working conditions. These conditions may require special uniforms or protective clothing for all weather and airborne and blood borne exposures. Candidates must be able to walk, stoop, climb, twist, bend, run, squat, kneel, and work in awkward positions when moving patients from all types of locations and within the wheelchair vans.
Additionally, the candidate may be required to perform various lifts and transfers of patients who may require the use of one or more of the following items: gurney, wheel chair, scoop stretcher or backboard, stair chair, and possibly a two person manual transfer.
Essential job tasks are defined as follows:
  1. Independent lift and carry for 100 feet of essential medical response equipment (i.e., first out bag, oxygen duffel bag) or patient belongings.
  2. Lift one end of a patient laden gurney from mid level to high level.
  3. Lift one end of a patient laden scoop stretcher or backboard from ground level to mid level gurney.
  4. Lift and pivot one end of a patient laden scoop stretcher or backboard over chest height obstacle.
  5. Carry one end of patient laden scoop stretcher or backboard up and down stairs.
  6. "Sit-pick" transfer of patient from chair to gurney or wheel chair.
  7. Lift, carry, and wheel patient laden "stair chair" or wheel chair up and down stairs.
  8. Lift one end of patient laden scoop stretcher or backboard to head height.
  9. Push patient laden wheel chair around various obstacles and over various floor surfaces.

Additional hazards may include working around ambulances and helicopters under various weather conditions; dealing with confused and agitated patients; exposure to known and unknown diseases; and working in confined spaces.
Job Responsibilities Relating to Patient Privacy
  1. The incumbent is expected to protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the Company's privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal [and state] law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider. Failure to comply with the Company's policies and procedures on patient privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment or of membership or association with REMSA or any of its affiliated companies.
  2. The incumbent may access protected health information and other patient information only to the extent that is necessary to complete your job duties. The incumbent may only share such information with those who have a need to know specific patient information you may have in your possession to complete their job responsibilities related to treatment, payment or other company operations.
  3. The incumbent is encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding the Company's policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of that policy to the designated company Privacy Officer.
  4. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in Company privacy training and updates made available to you. It is required to communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients and others in accordance with Company policy.
