Job description

Summary:

In this role, as part of the Project Development Environmental Team, you will be responsible for field surveys, site investigation, environmental impact assessments, and environmental due diligence for a variety of projects located primarily in the state of Maine. The role of a Wetland Scientist requires technical skills, as well as strong organizational and communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys for Protected Natural Resources, including Wetland and Waterbody Delineations, Significant Wildlife Habitat and Vernal Pool Surveys, Wetland Functional Assessments, and Natural Resource Inventories.
  • Delineate wetlands per the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual and applicable Regional Supplements.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and complete environmental reports, permit applications, and agency notifications.
  • Document OHWM and geophysical characteristics of waterbodies.
  • Data entry, data review, and GPS use.
  • Compile and evaluate data to prepare plans, permits, and survey reports for wetlands.
  • Provide task and project management assistance with environmental permitting (local, state, and federal) and compliance support.
  • Familiar with environmental permitting for the following: Maine DEP Natural Resources Protection Act, Site Location of Development Act, Federal Clean Water Act Permitting – Army Corps of Engineers, National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Collaborate with other NES team members to execute impact assessment and capital project delivery (e.g., baseline studies, environmental impact assessment, routing studies, land planning, and facility siting and permitting).
  • Perform project tasks within scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Professionally communicate environmental information and build confidence with external partners such as financiers, investors, buyers, and vendors.
  • Maintain a culture of continuous improvement and problem solving.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Work Environment
This position generally operates in the field, attending external meetings and performing field surveys for potential solar arrays. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The employee will be exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The employee is required to drive a vehicle.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position and may require occasional long hours.

Travel

Travel up to 50% during the growing season to meet project requirements for fieldwork, agency meetings, training, or project team meetings.

Travel is state-wide, although some projects will require more extended and overnight travel.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably related to environmental science, sustainable management, or natural resource ecology.
  • Wetland Delineator Certification - In Training or Professional or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience conducting protected natural resource surveys, wetland, and stream delineations in the Northeastern Region in a professional capacity.
  • Minimum of one (1) field season of wetland delineation experience using the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual and Regional Supplement(s) and appropriate wetland delineation training or coursework, preferably in the Northeast region.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and on challenging terrain.
  • Ability to work in the field for an extended period.
  • Experience with ArcGIS or similar software.
  • Working knowledge of sub-meter accuracy GPS technologies and map interpretation skills (e.g., NWI, USGS, aerial photography).
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare concise and accurate technical documents and develop presentations for internal and external leaders and stakeholders
  • Proficiency with Microsoft O365 suite of products
  • A strong commitment to safety
  • Valid drivers license and ability to travel

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to siting issues and regulatory agency processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to build consensus and manage expectations of internal and external stakeholders, as well as being comfortable and effective at communicating complex technical knowledge and concepts to other staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and non-technical project stakeholders.
