Job description

2,500 Environmental Services staff. 20 technical specialties. 900 professional associations. An international team with local expertise. You could say we know a little something about the environment. Our passion for it drives our work. Grounded by safety, quality, and ethics, we come up with solutions that perfectly fit the site. We know what it takes to balance competing project interests with creativity and efficiency. We know what to look for. And we know how to get the job done-the right way. Join a team that has the environment down to a science.

Our Environmental Services group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively. We provide integrated, multidisciplinary services to identify and assess liabilities and risks, and to develop solutions to site management, remediation, and mitigation. Our staff of professionals includes specialists in botany, ecology, fisheries biology, forestry, GIS, habitat and ecosystem restoration, environmental monitoring and risk assessment, hydrogeology, hydrology, information management, permitting and compliance, soil science, state and federal permitting, regulatory negotiation, storm water permitting and planning, wetland science, and wildlife biology.

Your Opportunity

Stantec seeks a Wetland Scientist to join our Environmental Services team. Our Environmental Services team provides a small company feel while supporting clients and projects at the local and national level.  Your core group of co-workers consists of a diverse team of environmental and regulatory specialists in Massachusetts and throughout New England. Our northeast Environmental Services team includes a deep bench of staff with diverse technical capabilities, who embrace the company culture of collaboration. It is a great place to work, learn, and grow your career.

Your Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will involve conducting and/or supporting wetland delineations and preparing environmental permit applications for our clients in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and elsewhere in New England.  The selected candidate will work efficiently and safely alone or with field teams and participate in other tasks, such as reporting, permitting support, and communication with project management, clients, and regulators.

The selected candidate should have experience delineating wetlands and other regulated resources according to the US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Wetlands Delineation Manual and Regional Supplement, and the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act. Experience delineating wetlands and an understanding of the applicable wetland related regulations and delineation protocols in other New England states is a plus. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant environmental discipline is required.

In addition to wetland delineation experience, selected candidates should have strong oral and written communication skills, excellent ethics, attitude, and morale. Candidates must have writing, organization, planning, and problem-solving skills. Experience driving/navigating in remote locations, and demonstrated experience with GPS or iPAD data collection technologies is desired. Successful wetland field scientists at Stantec have opportunities for professional development, are often challenged with learning new skills (i.e. wildlife and fisheries related), and work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects.

This position can be remote and/or based out of one or a combination of the following company office locations: Quincy, MA, Boston, MA, Burlington, MA, Northampton, MA, Hartford, CT, or Providence, RI.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Inland and coastal resource delineations pursuant to the requirements of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and other applicable State regulations, as well as Section 404/401 of the Federal Clean Water Act
  • Preparing technical reports detailing wetland delineations and other natural resource based surveys.
  • Report and permit application preparation for the Corps and Massachusetts DEP Division of Wetlands and Waterways
  • Interacting and communicating effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, regulators, and/or clients
  • Knowledge of computer applications and functions, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 2-5 years' work experience; or an equivalent combination of education (e.g. advanced degree) and experience.

This description is not a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that may be required of the employee and other duties, responsibilities and activities may be assigned or may be changed at any time with or without notice.
