nuInventa is currently seeking a qualified person to fill a Wetland Ecologist/Environmental Scientist position at our office in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This position primarily involves conducting wetland delineations; assisting with writing a variety of permit applications, including those under Section 10, 401, and 404 of the Clean Water Act; conducting threatened and endangered species and habitat surveys; assisting with Phase I Environmental Site Assessments; and collecting a variety of environmental samples and field data. In-office activities include writing reports, creating maps in a Geographic Information System, organizing data, and working with teams to develop solutions for clients.
Key Responsibilities
- The position is approximately 60 percent field work and 40 percent office work.
- Typical work day is 8 hours with occasional work days of up to 12 hours.
- Field activities include plant and wildlife identification, threatened and endangered species surveys, wetland and waters of the U.S. surveys, native plant surveys, etc.
- Utilize GIS data, Trimble GPS equipment and software, ArcGIS, flora and fauna field guides, topographic maps, and aerial photographs.
- Research literature and regulatory requirements, prepare reports and maps, and organize and edit GIS data.
- Prepare field reports, internal correspondence, and sections of formal reports.
- Follow company and site safety standards in accordance with nuInventa policies.
- Travel to project sites throughout Indiana and southern Michigan.
Skills / Qualifications
Role Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related scientific discipline or technical field
- Experience in plant identification
- Proficient technical report writer
- Good computer skills for database work and proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Organized with good time management skills in order to assist with timely completion of develiverables
- Work successfully in a team environment
- Willingness to work flexible hours, outside normal business hours as required, possibly including weekend work
- Willingness to work outside in inclement weather conditions and in remote areas
- Willingness to travel to project sites in Indiana and southern Michigan with occasional travel to Ohio; average travel ranges from 1 to 2 days overnight
- Must have a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Midwest fauna and/or flora knowledge and experience
- Familiarity with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual (1987 Edition) as well as Midwest and Northcentral/Northeast Regional Supplements
- Ability to identify hydric soils
- Experience with ArcGIS 10.4 or ArcGIS Pro
Physical Demands
- Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions
- Ability to hike, lift equipment (up to 30 pounds), and willingness to work extended hours (10+ hour days), as needed
- Ability to legally and safely drive a company vehicle
Compensation
Hourly compensation is provided; the rate is commensurate experience.
Work Location
The primary work location is nuInventa’s office in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A work-remote arrangement may be considered.
