Job description

Position Title: Yard Manager
Reports to: General Manager
Classification: Hourly
Department: Yard Workers
The successful candidate will be someone who easily recognizes when to direct the team and when to roll up their sleeves and help the team. Time is money in the construction and building materials arena and it is necessary for the successful candidate to build and lead a team focused on speed and accuracy. Most importantly, in the fast-paced yard area, the successful candidate must be able to develop relationships with both internal and external customers.
Purpose of Position: Supervise all activities of yard and warehouse, including personnel and equipment, scheduling deliveries and unloading of materials, and verification of merchandise delivered and received. Helps keep yard and warehouse maintained well, clean, organized, and safe.
Essential Functions: (must be able to perform these functions, with or without reasonable accommodation).
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities: training associates; planning, assigning, and directing work; and addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Supervise Yard and Warehouse workers, Forklift Operators, and Truck Drivers
  • Schedule associate work hours to meet the budget and business demands determined by the General Manager or Assistant Manager
  • Must successfully pass company-provided forklift operator training program and maintain “certification” through safe operation and following of procedures
  • Unload or oversee the unloading and storage of incoming merchandise; ensure that received merchandise matches purchase orders
  • Schedule and dispatch customer deliveries to job sites and pick-ups
  • Ensure that all merchandise has been invoiced before leaving yard
  • Inspect delivery loads to determine that sales invoices and materials match
  • Evaluate condition of returned material and ensure that Return Credit Authorization is filled out and submitted
  • Maintain accurate shipping logs, including destination, time out and time in, etc.
  • Oversee that all equipment is checked daily and that all inspection forms are filled out completely and accurately; ensure that proper maintenance is performed
  • Organize yard layout according to merchandise needs, inform General Manager or Assistant Manager of inventory needs, overages, damaged material, and inventory adjustments for cut lumber
  • Manage usage and maintenance of banding equipment
  • Provide quality customer service for all customers
  • Maintain good relations and morale of employees and customers
  • Maintain a clean yard environment, including warehouses, fences, and open areas
  • Attend and participate in all company sponsored training programs as required
  • Ensure compliance with operational safety and security policies as outlined in the company safety program
  • Comply with specified company dress code
  • Assist supervisor or other employees as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the GM/AGM
Education
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
Experience
  • One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: (Duties that are likely to be assigned to this person unless they prove unable to perform them after receiving training and/or accommodations that the company judges appropriate).
  • Administrative skills including assigning work, discipline, evaluating, planning, selection/termination, supervision, and training
  • Ability to do basic math, read instructions, and complete forms
  • Communicate with customers, other employees, and supervisors using verbal and written skills
  • Knowledge and ability of safe lifting techniques
  • Interpersonal skills with a focus on customer service
  • Basic computer skills
Physical Demands
  • Strength (lift, carry, push, and pull), maximum lift – 100 lbs.; frequently lift/carry – up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with manual dexterity
  • Vision (acuity, depth perception, field of vision, and accommodation)
  • Reach over head to grasp materials
Working Conditions
  • Work outside in temperatures ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold
  • Work with mechanical equipment on a daily basis
  • Wear required safety protection
  • Work in areas with high noise levels
