Description:

The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the stewardship of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. The Collection is currently accepting resumes for the position of Visitor Services Assistant.


The Visitor Services Assistant is the principal liaison with visitors, including greeting the public, engaging visitors with information and commentary, and collecting visitor data and statistics. This position also assists the Head of Visitor Services and the Visitor Services Supervisor, helps with other museum programs, projects, and provides front desk Visitor Services throughout the properties.


The ideal candidate must have a sincere and sustained interest in New Orleans’ and Louisiana’s unique history and the ability to learn and retain substantial amounts of historical information. Qualified candidates must demonstrate exceptional customer service and communication skills, an ability to be part of a team, and be responsive to a dynamic work environment. Additionally, the successful candidate must be able to handle cash and learn and use job-related software. A proficiency in a foreign language (French, German, or Spanish) is preferred.


This is a full-time position. The work hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Collection offers a competitive salary and a dynamic, educational culture.

Job Summary:


The Visitor Services Assistant is the principal liaison with visitors, responsible for greeting the public, engaging visitors with information and commentary, collecting visitor data and statistics and selling tickets and memberships. This position also assists the Visitor Services Supervisor and the Head of Visitor Services, helps with other museum programs and projects, and provides front desk Visitor Services throughout the properties.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The below duties and responsibilities are essential core functions of this position.Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  1. Welcome visitors to THNOC. Politely and efficiently answer questions and provide information to visitors.
  2. Participate in ongoing training to learn exhibition content and new information. Engage with visitors in multiple ways to share content and knowledge.
  3. Monitor all exhibition, orientation and other public spaces to ensure collections remain secure and that facility issues are documented via an internal reporting system.
  4. Accurately collect visitor statistics and other information related to the visitor experience. Provide this data electronically, in writing and verbally to colleagues.
  5. Act as principal liaison when on the ticketing desk, carrying out such duties as welcoming visitors, answering questions and providing information, issuing and scanning tickets through Tessitura software, answering the telephone and directing calls to the appropriate staff, selling memberships and tours, handling cash/commerce transactions and reporting problems and other concerns via the Kace software system
  6. Assist the Visitor Services Supervisor and/or the Head of Visitor Services as needed.
  7. Other duties as assigned.


Required Job Qualifications:


Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Experience:

  • Background historical knowledge

Knowledge, Skills Abilities:

  • Sincere and sustained interest in the history of New Orleans and Louisiana.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to accurately handle cash.
  • Ability to learn and retain substantial amounts of historical information.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with others as well as demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to be flexible and responsive to an evolving work environment.
  • Ability to learn and use job-related software.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to make decisions and respond to critical situations.
  • Good physical condition with ability to lift 25 pounds.


Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history or related field.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language (French, German, or Spanish).

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position, move throughout the properties, operate a computer and other office machinery, and position self to work at workstation. This position observes, inspects, and assesses documents, and similar materials as well as The Collection’s acquisitions.
