Who you are: 

You are a driven and collaborative leader who is knowledgeable of the U.S federal legislative, regulatory and budgetary processes. You possess a deep understanding of congressional and cabinet policy-making processes, including an understanding of the roles and decision points in the Executive Agencies, the White House, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House, ideally from direct Capitol Hill or other government experience. 

Ideally, you’ll possess 7+ years of experience in government dealing with industry/trade advocacy issues, working on or with Capitol Hill or directly with a US federal agency. In addition, you’ll have 5+ years of supply chain experience in the private sector – experience in consumer-packaged goods (cpg), retail, and/or the healthcare industry is a plus. 

You are a persuasive communicator who can translate complex concepts and programs into concise and credible messages at the highest levels of government and business, with a proven track record of delivering high-volume and high-quality work. 

You possess strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to understand diverging points of view within the community and quickly build consensus on strategy; to foster collaborative decision making for GS1 US and its industry membership.  

What you will do: 

In short, you will develop and lead the GS1 US strategy and engagement with the U.S. Government (Executive Offices, Agencies, Congress), and key third parties (associations, non-governmental organizations, etc.). This includes comprehensive federal government engagement strategies, initiatives and regulatory compliance activities. 

Here are a few other job duties associated with this role:  

  • Assess the political and policy landscape, as well as potential future political developments, to devise strategic positioning for GS1 US and its members on priority issues. 
  • Develop regulatory response strategies as directed by industry membership and oversee execution by the GS1 US team and coordination with member company’s and partners.
  • Establish and maintain a sophisticated network of contacts among key government agencies, such as the US FDA, USDA, Customs and Border Protection, etc.
  • Represent GS1 US and its membership on key agency programs and proposed regulations.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with member company federal affairs teams, as well as allied groups and coalitions.
  • Identify the need for development of issue briefs, research, infographics and talking points to effectively engage government agencies accordingly.
  • Generate and sustain enduring relationships with key government agency staff.
  • Demonstrate an ability to anticipate, understand, react, shape, and educate government agency actions that impact the company’s interests.
  • Prepare advocacy strategy and action plans to advance GS1 US member programs.
  • Be a thought leader in the community, including engaging in industry association activities and participating in events of interest to GS1 US and its membership.
  • Spearhead the annual business planning effort to define our federal priorities and articulate our agenda, sharing among internal leaders, GS1 US industry members, and the Board of Governors, and gathering feedback.
  • Track, develop and execute on federal legislative, regulatory, and funding opportunities.
  • Manage/collaborate with internal staff and consultants.
  • Prepare senior leadership for meetings with executive leaders within government agencies.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Vice President, Market Development and senior GS1 US leaders.
  • Assess and develop the skills and capabilities for each member of the GS1 US government team; identify strengths and development opportunities; provide regular coaching and feedback; foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, respect and trust among the team.
