Job description

What do you do all day?
The Vice President of Finance is responsible for developing and executing the fiscal strategy, overseeing the operation of the finance organization, and ensuring timely reporting of financial information in compliance with all applicatory regulations and laws for an evolving ~$20M nonprofit organization of over 250 full-time and part-time staff members nationwide. NMSI is a revenue-generating nonprofit organization that utilizes a blended revenue model to sustain and advance its work. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of ensuring strategic growth, long-term sustainability, and organizational fiscal health.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, indirectly to the CEO, and with fiduciary oversight from the Board Finance Committee Chair, this full-time position is home-office based anywhere in the contiguous United States. It will require occasional travel for in-person meetings and conferences. The VP will directly manage two directors (accounting operations and financial planning and analysis) and oversee the finance department.
What are the details?
  • As a member of the leadership team, help establish the organizations vision and overall strategy, ensuring alignment across all relevant stakeholders, including direct reports and the entire management team
  • As a member of the board-level Finance Committee, be accountable to the board for timely reporting on the financial condition of the organization, supporting the Board's fiduciary responsibility
  • Strategically managing revenue streams across federal, corporate philanthropy and fee-for-service dollars to ensure financial health and long-term sustainability
  • Set and implement a multi-year financial strategy anchored by our strategic plan and program services that meet the organizations reach and impact measures of success
  • Facilitate and evaluate our multi-year investment plan through consistent review of internal and external signals to determine opportunities for growth
  • Serve as a voting member of NMSI's 401k committee and share fiduciary oversight of the plan
  • Drive organizational risk analysis and mitigation planning
  • Oversee financial strategy, leading the Finance team in the development of financial models, budgets, and analyses
  • Improve and maintain a comprehensive, simplified pricing template for internal use to inform external proposals
  • Ensure timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends, and forecasts
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all regulatory and legally required financial reports
  • Provide leadership-level recommendations on the financial implications of business operations and activities, including a focus on quarterly revenue goals related to fee for service, corporate philanthropy and grant revenues
  • Interface with auditors and tax advisors to advance NMSIs goals and objectives
  • Provide valuable financial insights to help make timely decisions about formulating, executing, and modifying business strategy
  • Develop and strengthen financial expertise in team members and support financial systems and processes across teams
  • Frame and interpret the "big picture" to the leadership team, finance team and other internal supervisors to guide them and their teams in short and long-term budgeting, planning, and financial management to achieve desired results
  • Promote an inclusive, equitable, and results-oriented organizational culture that enables extraordinary outcomes and engages team members
  • Empower teams to take responsibility for their jobs and goals, delegating responsibility appropriately, expecting accountability, and delivering timely feedback regularly

Qualifications
What are we looking for?
  • Education & Experience You have at least seven years of senior-level finance experience, preferably with at least five years at a national nonprofit organization, with increasing levels of responsibility, leadership roles, and a track record of success. Ideally, you are also a Certified Public Accountant or working toward certification.

What do we offer?
The hiring range for this position is $185,408-$213,219 and commensurate with related experience. We take pay equity seriously and work hard to ensure our team members are paid fairly, regardless of their gender, race, or other demographic backgrounds. In addition to a competitive salary with the potential for an annual pay increase, we offer a comprehensive total rewards package, including paying roughly 78% of employee-only medical, dental, and vision benefits plus a large portion for dependents. Staff is eligible to participate in 401(k) after 90 days of employment, with up to a 6% employee match, fully vested on day one of participation in the plan. Other benefits for full-time employees include referral and performance-based annual bonuses, telecommunications stipends for eligible remote employees, 25 paid holidays annually (including a two-week-long winter break), and a generous PTO policy starting at 12 days per year.
