Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to provide humane care for the animals we serve. As a split position between the Veterinary Clinic and Admissions Department, you will be required to adhere to and maintain the established standards in accordance with shelter and state policy, and help our animals stay as comfortable as possible while in our care. The ideal candidate will perform a variety of animal handling and health care duties, and assist in surgical procedures in accordance with the duties or limitations set by the Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board. Experience is preferred, but we will train the right candidate.
DIRECT REPORTS: Director of Operations and Director of Veterinary Medicine
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate safe and appropriate animal handling and restraint.
Assist with anesthesia/surgical prep, and peri/post-operative monitoring, transport of animals receiving surgeries (Fridays).
Assist with movement of patients, recovery of patients, and continuous post-surgery patient observation - promptly responding to any concerns (Fridays).
Properly clean, sterilize, and pack surgical supplies for the next workday (Fridays).
Assist with humane euthanasia procedure or crematory.
Maintain excellent cleaning standard of intake rooms (M-Th) and clinic (Fridays).
Minimize disease transmission by adhering to cleaning protocols.
Perform health care services such as daily rounds, microchipping, vaccinations, and other treatments under the direction of the DVM.
Ensure prompt and accurate entries of medical information in shelter management system.
Accurately fill prescription medications under the direction of the DVM.
Efficiently dispense AM and PM treatments and/or medications to animals under the direction of the DVM/CVT.
Effectively and compassionately communicate with the public regarding lost pets, animal surrenders, stray intakes, and euthanasia appointments.
Communicate with and educate shelter staff and/volunteers regarding veterinary-related information, as appropriate.
Help maintain appropriate quantities of Admissions supplies.
Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee will be required to handle, restrain, lift and have contact with a variety of animals.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to and comes in close contact with a variety of animals; therefore, the employee cannot be allergic to these animals or must have ability to control those allergies.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee must be able to bend and use legs, arm, and back muscles without discomfort.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
Radiation equipment is in use on-site.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee may potentially be exposed to zoonotic disease, encounter scenarios of animal suffering or abuse, and be witness to humane euthanasia and cremation process or animal death.
This Job is a new position being created for HSSC. It may be amended in the future based on the needs of the veterinary and Admissions departments.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Schedule (subject to change): Monday to Thursday 8:00am – 4:30pm (Admissions Department) and Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm (Veterinary Assistant).
- License/Certification: Valid Driver's License (Required).
- Work Location: In person
- Ability to effectively communicate (both verbally and in writing) with the public, volunteers, and coworkers.
