Job Description Summary:

The Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic performs preventive maintenance and repair of large and small equipment to include, but not be limited to vacuums, scrubbers, and vehicles. The Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic maintains and repairs small hand and power tools, or equipment used in commercial janitorial service functions. The Mechanic keeps records on preventive maintenance services performed and repairs completed on all equipment, is accountable for all small hand and power tools, and maintains an inventory of parts and supplies for equipment.

Requirements:

Education:

Required: High School Diploma or GED, plus specialized or technical training in repair and maintenance of small and large sized gasoline engines.

Experience:

Required: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in repairing gasoline powered engines is required; experience repairing and maintaining small engines, hydraulics, and welding and torch work is preferred.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Requires a general mechanical ability; skills in the use of hand tools and test equipment associated with the maintenance of gasoline powered engines; ability to diagnose gasoline engine failures and make repairs to engine, carburetor, injectors, electrical, brake, steering, transmission, and hydraulic systems.

Considerable working knowledge of the standard methods, tooling equipment and safety practices as they relate to small equipment and automobile repair industry. Strong sills in electrical diagnostics and troubleshooting as it relates to the trade.

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel programs. Ability to retain maintenance logs and monitor scheduled preventive maintenance.

Ability to comprehend and carry out written and oral instructions. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to adjust from one task to another. Ability to review and assess situations critically and effectively while working independently toward the best interest of the company, customer, and employee.

Physical:

Requires the use of small hand and power tools. Requires the ability to lift and/or transport supplies, equipment, and machinery weighing up to 70 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and reaching daily. Requires a full range of physical motion to repair and test the operation of electrically powered and/or gasoline powered equipment and vehicles. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Senses of sight and hearing correctable to normal.

Special:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
  • Must possess and maintain automobile liability insurance no less than the minimum required by law for the state of residence
  • Must possess or can obtain a DOT medical card
  • Ability to meet company fleet safety requirements
  • Must possess reliable transportation
  • Ability to successfully pass drug test, background check, and motor vehicle report according to standards established by company policy

Working Conditions:

Various job site environmental conditions. Driving Company Vehicle with frequent exposure to seasonal conditions getting in and out of vehicle.

Requires exposure to waste oil, greases, and fuels and use of chemical solvents and cleaners used in the repair and maintenance of gasoline powered engines and Equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs preventive maintenance of equipment and vehicles by following manufacturers' recommendations or using personal experience regarding tune-ups, lubrication, oil and filter changes, adjusting or changing belts and hoses on cars and/or vans.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and audits vehicle maintenance repairs to include preventative, mechanical, and electrical repair.
  • Ensures quality, compliance, and safety of company's assets.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical and computer system problems; rebuilds or repairs brakes, electrical, engine, power train, hydraulic and steering components; performs any welding or fabrication required by the fleet; research shop manuals, manufacturers web-sites and on-line service manuals; uses computerized diagnostic equipment and interprets results.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections by using diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and Inspection forms, to Company standards and completes vehicle road testing. Signs off inspection forms as meeting standards.
  • Reduces the need for contract maintenance services of vehicles and Equipment by troubleshooting and repairing (within capabilities) a variety of equipment, automotive and truck problems including electrical systems, brakes, carburetors, engine compression, clutch and transmission, injectors, differentials, pumps, hydraulic and power take-off operations.
  • Ensures that vehicles and Equipment requiring major maintenance services or repairs receive those services by determining the extent of services or repairs required and arranging with contract maintenance shops for services or repairs beyond the capability to perform or that are too costly (i.e., time and money) to perform in house.
  • Disassembles parts and inspects for wear and reusability using the manufacturer's guidelines, mechanic's hand tools and precision testing equipment.
  • Promotes preventive maintenance as a strategy for maintaining vehicles and Equipment by developing and recommending preventive maintenance programs and schedules, instructing field workers on the proper methods of operation and upkeep of the equipment, inspecting tools and Equipment for their condition, repairing, cleaning, adjusting, or lubricating them, and notifying the supervisor of signs of equipment abuse or neglect.
  • Maintains appropriate maintenance records by keeping records of all equipment operating hours, preventive maintenance services performed, and repairs completed.
  • Maintains accountabilities for all small hand and power tools by issuing those tools to departmental employees when requested, receiving the tools after use, and securing the tools in the proper storage container as directed.
  • Ensures the availability and accountability of required parts, components, and supplies by maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies for vehicles and Equipment, storing those items in an appropriate and secure container, and reordering replacement items as necessary.
  • Repairs damaged equipment by welding and/or cutting to mend broken, bent or loose items where close fit or tolerances are not critical.
  • Assists with the preparation of bid sheets and purchase orders by contacting vendors and commercial suppliers for bids on specific parts and identifying the proper mechanical terminology to describe the parts needed.
  • Available to provide emergency services to haul back vehicles if/when broken down.
  • Safely operates Company vehicles while picking up or delivering parts and Equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions.
  • Writes up repair and parts orders; maintains a safe, clean, and organized workplace; picks up and delivers parts, supplies and Equipment or vehicles as required.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Company by performing all other related duties as assigned.
