Position Description
POSITION OPEN CONTINUOUSLY - WILL FILL AS NEEDED
HOURLY RATE: $15.30 per hour
Additional pay for certifications obtained:
Lifeguard Certification - $0.25 per hour
Water Safety Instructor - $0.25 per hour
Emergency Medical Responder/Emergency Medical Technician - $0.25 per hour
The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary variable employees to supplement our permanent workforce. These variable employees are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency.
The definition of a Variable Employee:
• Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
• Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
• NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).
Variable public safety work in the enforcement of regulations and protection of life at municipal pools.
An employee in this classification exercises responsibility for the safety of swimmers and non-swimmers using pools, and for rendering assistance in emergencies. Work is Variable in nature and is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations governing the public use of City pools and adjacent areas. Supervision is received from a superior who makes work assignments and reviews work by observation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Guards, monitors, and watches community patrons in and around the pool; ensures all safety standards and rules are upheld; performs lifesaving techniques, first aid, and skilled guarding practices.
  • Performs consistent and professional customer service for the pool patrons and community; responds to facility inquiries, provides guidance and direction, and promotes programs and pool activities.
  • Maintains, cleans, and performs general upkeeping duties for the pool facilities; backwashes, scrubs, and maintains the filters of the pool; monitors the pool pumps and applies the appropriate pool chemicals when needed; cleans, sanitizes, and maintains the pool deck, bathrooms, and surrounding areas; performs daily and weekly maintenance.
  • Greets, engages, registers, directs, and performs all check in and transaction duties for the pool facilities; answers phones, provides responses, and ensures all patrons have all necessary information that has been requested.
  • Researches, gathers, and compiles information for pool usage including monitoring weather, pool chemicals, and other determinizing factors.
  • Performs basic first aid and CPR when needed; remains up to date on newest safety information; provides care using calm skill and timely action; enforces rules and safety regulations within the pool area; identifies and addresses areas of violation with tact and professionalism.
  • Performs any and all duties and tasks required or necessary to ensure all patrons are safe and able to enjoy the pool amenities; processes payments and transactions, runs various reports, manages the care of facilities, and ensures the efficient and timely care of community needs and safety issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
  • A valid State driver's license is preferred.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor OR Lifeguarding Certification from a nationally recognized aquatic training agency is required. Both certifications are preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid required.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor - New Material Certificate is preferred.

Education and Experience:
Previous Pool Guard, Swimming Instructor or related work experience preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
