Employees in this class perform a variety of tasks in maintaining and operating the water distribution system in accordance with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standards. Employee will use acquired knowledge and skills in installing/testing water meters, operating trucks and heavy equipment, applying chemicals, laboratory analysis, setting and repairing hydrants. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Public Works and Water Utility Superintendent through the Water Utility Foreman. Hours of this position are generally 7am-3pm with cell phone issued for expected response 24/7; during bad weather and other emergencies, position is required to work for long periods of time with minimal breaks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The following are the fundamental job duties and responsibilities. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive; other duties may be required and assigned, as management deems necessary.
  • Response to after hour's emergencies, "on-call" currently a 4-man rotation one full week at a time.
  • Plows snow at water utility properties and as required, also on a rotation for the snowplow routes for the street department.
  • Make water taps.
  • Repairs broken water mains, hydrants, and gate valves.
  • Install, test for accuracy, clean and repair water meters as needed.
  • Takes water meter readings.
  • Locate stop boxes, raising and adjusting them as needed.
  • Operate vacuum excavation equipment.
  • Collects water samples and tests for various parameters as required.
  • Takes daily pump readings.
  • Performs routine maintenance work on pumps and other electrical devices.
  • Perform Utility Diggers Hotline locates using a radio detection and ferrous metal locators.
  • Operate SCADA systems, computer, tablet devices and use the Villages GIS system.
  • Perform utility locates using a radio frequency locator.
  • Landscape utility properties.
  • Climb, drain and fill elevated tanks, sterilizing them as required.
  • Operate a dump truck hauling gravel, dirt, salt, fill or other related materials.
  • Operate heavy equipment as assigned.
  • Fill out work sheets allocating time spent on various projects.
  • Exercise gate valves and flush fire hydrants.
  • Fill and maintain chemical tanks and pumps.
  • Communicate with utility customers in a courteous manner.
  • Works overtime as required.
  • Does related work as assigned or required.

Typical Qualifications
  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Residency in the Village of Germantown is not required, but a reasonable response time in the event of emergency recall is required.

  • The ability to develop and maintain an effective relationship with the public and to communicate both verbally and in writing.

  • Shall possess a Grade 1 Water Supply Certification with subgrades G, D and I issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources within the first 2 years of employment, or equivalent through reciprocity.

  • Applicant must have possession of and maintenance of a valid Wisconsin Class (remove A), B CDL License with an N endorsement or the ability to obtain same within six (6) months of hiring.

Dental Insurance
$1,300 annual benefit per eligible person; Premium paid 100% by the Village with $25 deductible.
Life Insurance
Employer-paid basic premium, value equal to 100% of the employee's annual salary rounded to the highest $1,000 with employee option to purchase up to two additional increments for a total of 3 times the employee's annual salary.
Long Term/Short Term Disability Insurance
The Village of Germantown offers a Short Term Disability plan through ETF to any regular employee that works at least 24 hours per week. The premium is paid 100% by ETF and the plan pays a monthly benefit of 75% of monthly base salary after the employee has been off work for 30 days.

Pay Periods/Direct Deposit
Village employees are paid bi-weekly, every other Monday. As an added convenience and safety measure, the Village requires all new employees to sign up for direct deposit of their payroll checks.
