LOCATION: Ukiah or Fort Bragg, California
POSITION SUMMARY
The Forestry Technician provides valuable field support for the management of approximately 74,000 acres of California coastal redwood forest. Working under the supervision of a Registered Professional Forester, the primary responsibilities will include timber sales preparation, timber marking, wildlife surveys and forest inventory to facilitate the carbon and timber inventories.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

- Forest inventory: Install and measure temporary and permanent plots to collect information on timber stand characteristics.
- Timber Sale Layout: Under the supervision of a Registered Professional Forester, identify and delineate harvest boundaries and stream buffers, identify and mark individual trees and small groups for harvest.
- Road and Sediment Source Assessments: Under the supervision of the Timberlands Manager, evaluate and quantify potential erosion sites and road maintenance needs.
- Biological surveys: Participate in surveys or habitat assessments for Northern spotted owls, red legged frogs, anadromous fish, and other species of interest.
- Silvicultural projects: Coordinate and oversee tree-planting, brush-clearing, weed removal and other projects.
- Office tasks: Organize records, enter inventory data.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Interest in forestry or natural resource management.
- Ability to navigate and work safely in forested conditions and steep terrain.
- Motivated individual, eager to learn and to contribute as opportunities arise.
- Strong work ethic and time management skills.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Driver’s license and clean driving record.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science degree in forestry, natural resource management or related field.
- Experience in wildland fire fighting.
- Ability to use ARCGIS.
- Fluency in Spanish.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- This position requires the ability to navigate and work safely in forested conditions and steep terrain.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This position will regularly require the ability to safely travel to and perform field tasks at distant work sites in variable weather conditions, at remote locations and sometimes in difficult and hazardous terrain.
- Estimated travel – less than 5%.
COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $55,000, and the position is eligible for opportunities to earn performance-based bonus compensation.
