Underwriter, Crime and Fidelity

The North America Wholesale and Retail Management Liability practice of AXIS is in need of a motivated Underwriter to join our Crime and Fidelity team. This individual will be responsible for assessing and managing new and existing accounts within our Commercial Crime and Fidelity Bond practice. Our focus is on Middle Market to Risk Management clients, and we specialize in Monoline Primary and Excess Layer Crime coverage.
Candidate Profile
The Underwriter will be a “hands-on” technical expert with a history of success within a top-tier Commercial Insurance Carrier focused on Commercial Crime and Fidelity Bond or General Management Liability (D&O, EPLI,) risk, targeting public & private Middle Market to Complex risk across a wide range of industry verticals.
The ideal candidate for the Underwriter role is an experienced professional in the field of commercial insurance. They should have a proven track record of success in a leading commercial insurance company, specifically in the areas of Commercial Crime and fidelity bond or general management liability risks. The candidate should have expertise in targeting middle market to complex risks across various industries.
In addition to technical expertise, the Underwriter should possess strong networking skills and be able to establish relationships with both retail and wholesale brokers. They should also demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of the underwriting process, including portfolio management, solicitation of submissions, underwriting analysis, and the preparation and issuance of indications, quotations, and binders. The ability to effectively market insurance products is also important.
Furthermore, the candidate should have a commanding presence and be skilled in communication and influencing. They should be able to build strong relationships that benefit AXIS and contribute to long-term strategic initiatives.
Work Profile
Based in one of our New York or Chicago offices, this position provides a hybrid work environment three days a week. Additionally, regular travel is necessary to engage in face-to-face meetings with brokers and clients and participate in industry and company events.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Retain existing business while strategically prospecting new opportunities.
- Manage a book of business with regard to new lines, renewals, and cross-marketing of product lines within AXIS: Lower Middle Market, Financial Institutions, Management Liability, Cyber and other business units
- Analyze and underwrite Commercial Crime business in compliance with the applicable guidelines and within allocated authority while conforming to best practices and focusing on efficiency and profitability.
- Build and maintain a broker network to support profitable business origination through the US broker market.
- Track industry and market developments and raise these for strategic discussions with our internal business partners – actuary, claims, product development, and field underwriters.
- Maintain an understanding of all current issues affecting the Commercial Crime product.
- Moderate travel to client underwriting meetings, broker visits, and attendance at fidelity industry conferences.
- Act as a resource for the Commercial Crime products for the field underwriters.
- Meet all divisional servicing objectives, including but not limited to quote turnaround, policy issuance, phone management, file maintenance, and documentation.
Required Education/Training & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree is required.
- A minimum of 1 year of Management Liability (D&O, EPLI, FI) or Commercial Crime or financial institution fidelity underwriting experience is preferred,
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required to develop and maintain relationships with brokers and internal business partners.

We expect to offer a base salary of $85,000 to $115,000 for this position. The specific salary offer will be based on an assessment of various factors, including the successful candidate's experience and work location. In addition, all employees are eligible for competitive incentive targets, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
