Job description

JOB PURPOSE

Manages, directs, and coordinates all operations of the plant to achieve production objectives in an efficient manner while maintaining a safe working environment.

SCHEDULE

Full time. Monday - Friday

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Develop and foster a “safety first” culture. Establish expectations for a safe and clean working environment.
  • Conduct safety training according to the Safety schedule in conjunction with the Safety Manager.
  • Conduct OSHA visits when necessary.
  • Manage production schedule to include shipping schedule/framing schedule/treating schedule.
  • Schedule and conduct plant meetings, as necessary.
  • Oversee plant Quality control and Safety.
  • Develop and execute improvement initiatives for quality, cost savings, development of personnel, efficiency etc.
  • Develop and maintain well trained motivated staff at adequate levels to meet production needs. Ensure cross training to prepare for vacations, unexpected vacancies, promotion, etc.
  • Ensure all plant assets are effectively managed and maintained.
  • Monitor expenses to keep costs within budget and initiate corrective action procedures to bring costs in line where necessary.
  • Ensure plant operations are consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Review plant invoices, packing slips, etc. for accuracy and approve for payment.
  • Monitor the shipping department for accuracy and correct any issues as they arise.
  • Coach and train yard supervisor to work within established parameters to meet and exceed manufacturing/shipping goals.
  • Consistently work with the office team to establish good & positive communication and ensure coordination of appropriate paper flow to keep inventories accurate, billing up to date, credits received etc.
  • Effective communication with the sales staff to ensure the maximum capacity of the plant is being utilized and production is meeting customer specs and deadlines on a consistent basis. Ensure corrective action is taken on all issues pertaining to quality and shipping.
  • Payroll, HR, and other personnel matters including discipline, interviewing, hiring, and terminating.

  • Coordinate Hazardous waste shipping and ensure proper documentation of all necessary environmental requirements in conjunction with Environmental Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises assigned staff. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Minimum Requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience: Experience in the forestry or lumber industry a plus, experience in manufacturing for a minimum of 1 year.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with Windows operation required.
  • Understanding of math and volumes. Is proficient with basic math and can easily transpose formulas. Familiar with metric and American (or English) Standard systems.
  • Planning/organizing - prioritizes and plans work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans with detailed follow through. Ability to stay on task without direct supervision.
  • Communication - demonstrates interpersonal oral communication skills by speaking clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations. Communications are clearly written with the audience identified and the message defined in an understandable format.
  • Dealing with ambiguity – is effective in coping with change and can comfortably manage risk and uncertainty.
  • Creativity – ability to create original and unique ideas and add value in brainstorming settings. Ability to think outside of the box.
  • Can diffuse even high-tension situations to drive to a comfortable result.
  • Willingness to make decisions, exhibit sound and accurate judgment, and make timely decisions for the result with limited direction. This would be after the initial training is completed.
  • Negotiate skillfully by settling differences and can win concessions without damaging relationships. Can be direct and forceful as well as diplomatic.
  • Technical Learning – ability to learn and comprehend new technical skills and knowledge.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sitting or standing while working on a computer for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and is occasionally required to sit, talk, and hear, and to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, infrequently lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment characteristics are best defined as an outdoor environment with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, precipitation, wind. Employees will have moderate exposure to noise as heard in pole production yard, including exposure to higher noise levels associated with power equipment. Employees will have light exposure to the chemicals and solutions used in treating wood.
