Summary
The City of Charleston is looking for a Transportation Engineer in Training to join its Traffic and Transportation Department! Under the direction and supervision of the Transportation Project Manager, this entry-level position assists with the planning, design, management, and review of road and sidewalk projects.
Examples of Duties
- Prepares in-house roadway and sidewalk design plans by use of AutoCAD, GIS, and other applicable design software.
- Evaluates consultant qualifications; prepares consultant scope of work and assists in the negotiation of design fees.
- Supports supervisors in evaluating projects for feasibility and cost based on analysis of data.
- Coordinates permit applications, construction permissions, easements, and right of way from property owners as needed.
- Coordinates utility relocations.
- Prepares bid documents and participates in the process to select qualified contractors.
- Coordinates with City staff to ensure compliance with applicable specifications.
- Effectively communicates project status to citizens and stakeholders.
- Assists supervisor in ensuring conformance to engineering plans, specifications, construction and safety standards, relevant laws, regulations and permissions.
- Reviews and provides comments or recommendation of approval of construction plans and specifications prepared by consulting engineers for road and sidewalk projects.
- Assists Transportation Project Manager with grant submittals, Bike/Ped committee, Technical Review Committee (TRC) reviews, traffic studies, and other Division tasks as assigned.
- Serves as parking ticket adjudication officer alongside others as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- B.S. or higher from an ABET accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction/Project Management, or related field.
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel and Word or similar software.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS software.
