ODOT's Mission Statement:

To provide a transportation system that is safe, accessible, well maintained, and positioned for the future.

What You Will Do*:

  • Operates & maintains survey instruments; monitors & accounts for factors pertaining to GNSS surveying (e.g., solar storms, atmospheric interference, radio & cellular interference); performs field calculations; keeps notes & records of survey data obtained; determines acceptable quality of recorded survey positions.
  • Uploads, downloads, organizes, & maintains digital survey data; performs office calculations, data processing, coordinate computations, traverse adjustment, & coordinate system transformations; organizes, digitizes & categorizes survey records & archives.
  • Researches state, county, & city public records (e.g., maps, property deeds, surveys, highway plans, city plans, subdivision plats) &/or utility companies, private engineering firms & surveying firms to provide detailed information to licensed surveyors &/or engineers for further analysis; performs Right-of-Way plan design, drafting, boundary line determination & resolution under the direction of a licensed surveyor, stays abreast of new technology (e.g., UAS) & developments as relates to position.
  • Ability to: understand surveying & civil engineering technology; use statistical analysis; comprehend & interpret plans & specifications; use proper research methods in gathering data; gather, collate & classify information about data, people, or things; handle routine & sensitive contacts with public, government officials, & property owners concerning assigned projects/plans; lift up to 50 lbs. of equipment.
  • Carry equipment and instruments, clear brush using machete, operate spud bar to recover survey markers.
  • Receives training in standard plans or projects, generates standard detailed drawing for specific portions of construction, maintenance, & planning of transportation projects.
  • Assists in review of highway & bridge plans.
  • Records project information in construction diary & on various reports
  • Performs administrative, fiscal, & computer tasks to gain exposure to all aspects of department.
  • Meets with public, government officials & property owners to provide information regarding projects.

Bachelor's degree in engineering; Accepted for Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors.
