JOB SUMMARY
The Stanford Health Care (SHC) Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) will act as a liaison within the SHC hospital environment to ensure that all transfusion-related activities are conducted in the safest and most cost-effective manner and meet or exceed all existing regulations and standards of practice.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Works in conjunction with the Transfusion Service Medical Director, Transfusion Service Quality and operations teams, Transfusion Committee, Providers, Medical staff and Nursing leadership to establish, monitor, and maintain safety protocols and procedures which comply with hospital policies, best practices, and regulatory requirements
•
Oversees the SHC hospital Patient Blood Management Program (PBM). Develop annual goals for the program in conjunction with the organization's quality and operational plan and assists in the preparation of the program's annual budget.

Develops transfusion education plan for providers, nursing and the TS and lab teams, and others
•
Leadership role in Transfusion Services monthly conferences, executive and management meetings, and serves as the liaison to the Stanford Blood Center. Provides updates to the SHC Transfusion Committee, nursing leadership councils and quality related committees on issues related to blood management, blood administration compliance and competency, and Transfusion Safety
•
Maintains effective communication and coordination with all disciplines that interface with blood management and transfusion activities
•
Works with providers and teams to ensure appropriate clinical use of blood products and works to medical staff leadership to address improvement opportunities.

Monitors revenue production and cost savings created by the blood management program
•
Ensures program complies with FDA, CDPH, CAP, AABB, TJC standards, CMS and all other state and federal regulations and professional standards as they relate to blood management and patient care
•
Technical/Clinical
•
Provides clinical input on relevant Lab and Nursing policies and procedures and reviews processes periodically, per regulatory requirements and/ or identified need.
•
Collaborates with medical, technical, and nursing personnel to identify, implement, and evaluate strategies for blood conservation and to prevent blood wastage
•
Reviews, recommends, and/or introduces patient blood management and transfusion-related technologies to the appropriate hospital personnel
•
Reviews published guidelines, standards, and literature on blood product use, blood transfusion techniques, and alternatives to transfusion and makes applicable recommendations
•
Collaborates with the Stanford Blood Center and regulatory bodies on transfusion-related matters
•
Consults with clinical services regarding patient blood management program changes that will affect blood product use, blood transfusion equipment needs, etc.
•
Assist with the oversight on the use of blood warmers and autotransfusion units, to ensure compliance is met
•
Acts as a resource for blood transfusion-related technical problems
•
Assess and Implement technological advances in transfusion medicine.
•
Utilization Management
•
Maintains blood product usage statistics.
•
Monitors and analyzes Transfusion Medicine utilization and brings utilization issues to the attention of the Medical Director(s) of the Transfusion Service, providers and medical staff leaders, Transfusion Committee, and Patient Blood Management Program.
•
Conducts prospective and retrospective audits on the utilization of blood, blood products, and their alternatives and identifies and investigates any trends related to transfusion practices
•
Develops and maintains a resource library of alternatives to blood transfusion, and educational material.
•
Promote benchmarking and evidence-based practice in the transfusion of the appropriate blood components and their alternatives; comparative financial aspects of alternatives with blood component therapy.
•
Quality and Risk Activities
•
Assists the Transfusion Service Quality Coordinator with reviews and investigations of blood and blood product incident reports and management of transfusion reactions; where appropriate, recommends changes to current practices
•
Ensures audits are performed on patient's charts for informed consent, blood administration compliance, and appropriate blood product utilization.
•
Ensures transfusion reactions are tracked and reported to the Transfusion Service; retrospective, concurrent, and prospective
•
Monitors blood product waste and maintains process improvement initiatives to identify high yield opportunities and minimize blood product waste.
•
Promotes benchmarking and evidence-based practice in the transfusion of the appropriate blood products and their alternatives
•
Works collaboratively with the Transfusion Service Medical Director, Transfusion Service Quality Coordinator, and the Transfusion Service Operations team, to ensure updating of policy and procedure manuals to reflect changes in transfusion practice
•
Arranges and conducts health-care team meetings as needed to facilitate the coordination of patient blood management services and resources
•
Participates with committees that require input on patient blood management and transfusion-related matters
•
Professional and Educational Activities
•
Provides education to physicians, technologists, nursing personnel and patients on the benefits, risk and alternatives of transfusion, as well as evidence-based guidelines for the appropriate use of blood products
•
Assists in planning educational programs on transfusion-related topics
•
Maintains professional growth and development in the field of patient blood management through an ongoing process of formal and informal education and clinical nursing study.
•
Identifies self-learning needs and establishes personal and professional goals as the Transfusion Safety Officer
•
Maintains a proactive involvement in professional organizations
•
Attends either the CBBS or AABB annual meetings each year and ensures the TS Blood program is aligned with current guidelines, and best practices
•
Acts as a resource for nurses, clinicians, and staff related to patient blood management and transfusion issues
•
Research
•
Participates in transfusion-related research
•
Participates and assists in the preparation of scientific papers for publication and/or presentation at scientific meetings on transfusion related matters
•
Collaborates with clinicians, researchers and company representatives to identify research priorities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
•
Bachelors_Degree Bachelor's degree required; Masters or advanced degree preferred.
Experience
•
Five (5) years of recent clinical experience in an acute care setting; management or supervisory experience preferred.

Solid computer skills and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications is required (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Thorough knowledge of transfusion practices and related issues.
•
Understanding and application of Quality Improvement and patient safety principles
•
Must be available to travel to off-site infusion treatment centers.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $70.43 - $93.34 per hour
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
