Job Description

The Apprentice Signal Technician is taught the skills and knowledge needed for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic signal control equipment and related devices including street lighting. Employee is assigned routine tasks at the beginning; as skills and knowledge progress, more difficult tasks are assigned, requiring an increase in reasonable and independent judgment.

Job Responsibilities

1. Learns and performs repairs of electrical, electronic, and microprocessor based equipment.
2. Learns and performs the testing and evaluation of traffic signal control equipment for system compatibility.
3. Learns and performs troubleshooting in the field and restores operations to traffic signal control devices that require repair.
4. Learns and performs wiring of control cabinets prior to field installation.
5. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes.
6. Performs all routine maintenance required to ensure that the traffic signal systems are operating properly.
7. Learns and performs the programming of various types of computerized traffic signal controllers.
8. Learns to test traffic signal control equipment and related devices to identify defects in electric and electronic equipment.
9. This position requires driving.
10. Performs other job related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements
  • 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • 2. No previous related work experience is required.
    3. Job requires a current, valid Texas Class C driver's license.
    4. Must have knowledge of basic electronics, theory and knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the electrical trade.
    5. Must be able to use standard hand tools and equipment required to perform routine maintenance of traffic signals.
    6. Must be able to interact with the public in a friendly and courteous manner using tact and diplomacy.
    7. Must be able to manage time efficiently, be a self-starter, and see all assignments through to completion, always using mature judgement.
    8. Must be able to effectively communicate in the English language.

    Physical Requirements

    1. The majority of work is performed outside with frequent physical effort and exposure to possible unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
    2. Job requires exerting up to 80 pounds on occasion and 25-50 pounds on a regular basis.
    3. Job physical effort involves standing, walking, heavy lifting, working at heights and driving from place to place.

    Additional Information

    1. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
    2. This positions has no supervisory responsibilities.
    3. Five-day 40 hour week and is subject to recall. Employee works outdoors in all weather conditions special projects and standby will may require occasional night or weekend work.
    4. Employee is expected to drive to and work at various city locations.
