Position Summary
The Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe (JST) Traditional Foods Assistant collaborates with the Traditional Foods Gathering Coordinator, (TFGC) to plan and organize Traditional Foods activities and related cultural events for the JST community. This position supports the oversight of JST's Community Wellness Garden activities and events.
Essential Functions
Develop, support, and enhance knowledge and consumption of indigenous and other healthy foods among JST community members.
Assist the TFGC to plan and offer community activities pertaining to traditional food sources including growing, harvesting, processing, and cooking foods.
Assist TFGC to promote and educate the JST community about healthy Traditional Foods and cultural traditions through events and activities, presentations, Tribal newsletter, Facebook page, and newsletter articles, with the goal of increasing participation in Traditional Foods and cultural activities and increased consumption of healthy Traditional Foods.
Assist in planning for the future growth of the Community Wellness Garden, including composting, soil amending, and putting the garden to rest.
Assist in the planning and implementation of Traditional Foods cooking and processing demonstrations for Tribal events.
Support the planning and facilitation of Traditional Foods cooking and processing demonstrations, ceremonies, and activities associated with the elder and youth programs.
Assist with planning, writing, and submitting grant applications and reports.
Assist with the training and mentoring of Summer Interns.
Assist in tracking program activities to ensure projects are on target.
Speak publicly, give presentations as required.
Adhere to all JST policies and procedures, including standards for safety and work practices described in the Occupational Exposure Control Plan.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements __________________
High School Diploma or equivalent required, associate degree preferred.
Eagerness to learn and grow with us. While prior experience is a plus, we are more interested in your potential and willingness to develop the necessary skills.
Experience in garden/farm management, Traditional Foods gathering and food sovereignty.
Experience in program development and social networking.
Knowledge of ethics and confidentiality procedures.
Knowledge of S'Klallam history, culture, community, and traditions, with experience in Tribal cultural environment.
Ability to manage staff and client relationships with respect to Tribal culture, values, and traditions.
Exceptional interpersonal skills including effective verbal and written communication, and ability to speak publicly in front of many people.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
Effective time management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Proficient computer and computer program(s) skills are required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to travel locally and regionally as assigned.
Valid Driver's License.
Must be able to successfully pass criminal background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
Three years of garden experience preferred. Other similar life and/or traditional knowledge experience will be considered in lieu of experience.
American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Must be available to work any shift (to include all hours, weekends, and/or holidays as job duties require).
Must be able to lift, push and carry up to 50 lbs. Unassisted.
Physical ability to access all areas of the property applicable to your position.
Must be able to withstand prolonged standing, sitting, walking, bending, climbing, squatting, and twisting without restriction.
Requires eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity; ability to distinguish letters, numbers, and symbols.
Must be able to reach at or below/above shoulder level continuously.
