Position Summary:

The Tool and Die Maker produces, repairs, adapts and rectifies tooling and other pieces of mechanical equipment.  This position reports to the Supervisor, Manufacturing Engineering.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Understands all aspects of operating a machine (every switch/button) and is able to program all machines in the department. 
  • Proficiently runs machine plus other machine in the department. (Department = TC’s, HMC’s, VM’s/HAAS, MC’s, Bridgeport’s) 
  • Under general supervision, makes, repairs, adapts and rectifies tool, dies and other pieces of mechanical equipment with high precision specifications and tolerances by interpreting blueprints, consulting specifications and making operative tests. 
  • Develops, constructs and repairs molds, prototype parts and fixtures necessary for producing quality parts. 
  • Writes basic programs and post edits to CNC programs to fine-tune processes for optimal performance.
  • Utilizes basic math, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Can calculate feeds and speeds.
  • Understands how to effectively solve problems. 
  • Effectively works with other operators and/or departments on continuous improvement projects achieving positive results.
  • Utilizes good communication skills including the ability to receive and give oral and written instruction.
  • Demonstrates good organizational, planning, and scheduling skills to optimize output. 
  • Interfaces with internal and external customers, management, suppliers, and other employees.   
  • Reads blue prints to recognize specifications on blueprint for various surfaces being machined.
  • Is able to make Metric and Metric to English print conversion.
  • Works from engineering drawings.
  • Lays out the design on the raw material.
  • Cuts it to size and shape using manually controlled machine tools, power tools, and hand tools. 
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of 3-D CAD/CAM computer programs.
  • Reads and produces prints of specified tools, fixtures, assembly jigs, utilize such measuring equipment as micrometers, calipers, gauges as required to ensure that specified tolerances are met or exceeded.   
  • Ensures that all responsibilities and functions performed are in accordance with company policy and procedures and meet required quality standards. 
  • Operates within acceptable defect rate.
  • Identifies when preventative maintenance is needed on assigned equipment. 
  • Conducts preventative & predictive maintenance schedules for tooling and plant equipment to ensure tooling and equipment reliability for the continuous improvement of the processes utilized at the site. 
  • Must have own tools expected to perform satisfactorily and achieve standard compliance.
  • Must have basic computer skills for maintaining database records related to die maintenance and change over notes.
  • Advises supervisor of conduct that may violate rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ minimum experience in a tooling environment, which includes fabricated tooling and CNC technology
  • CNC, CAD, CAM, and other computer-aided technologies experience strongly preferred

 

Education and Certification Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by an apprenticeship in tool and die making or an equivalent technical education

 

Physical Requirements: (To be met with or without accommodations)

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Stand 10 hours a day
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Eye hand coordination and attention to detail
  • Ability to bend, twist and turn
