Under the direction of the Dean of Academic Support Services and in collaboration with the ASTC Faculty Coordinator and ASTC Specialist, oversees and supports the activities and daily operations of the ASTC at an assigned Center (Vacaville Center and/or the Vallejo Center). Provide academic support and tutoring in English, Social Sciences, or Humanities OR in Math and STEM so that all student may persevere and succeed. Assist with recruitment and supervision of peer tutors and maintain Center ASTC records, reports, statistical data; serve as an Early Alert and academic support services resource; and collaborate with Center faculty on meeting student tutoring needs.
Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned.
- Provide Site Leadership, supervision and provide academic support and tutoring to Solano Community College's diverse student population
- Responsible for opening and closing of the Center ASTC according to published Center schedule
- Provide an open, welcoming, and professional environment in which students can study and peer tutors and instructional assistants can provide excellent services
- Work with students in the Center ASTC on a one-to-one, small group, and workshop basis, providing tutoring and remedial assistance in discipline-specific (primarily English or Math) skills to students enrolled in a variety of courses, employing a variety of approaches to effectively serve learners with diverse learning styles and abilities
- Provide student worker orientation to new hires to help them learn the Center ASTC layout, policies, and procedures.
- Support and supervise student tutors and other center staff, ensuring proper timekeeping and adequate staffing despite absences or other scheduling conflicts that arise.
- Ensure the security and cleanliness of the space and assigned equipment, materials, and supplies, including maintaining equipment lending logs (such as for graphing calculators, anatomy models, etc.).
- Provide information and assistance to students on the telephone and in-person regarding established ASTC policies and procedures, campus resources and programs
- Conduct outreach, including making periodic presentations to classes at the campus Center and other groups regarding tutoring services, and tabling at events as assigned.
- Assist in recruiting new peer tutors, disseminating applications and helping students to complete them
- Provide leadership to resolve day-to-day issues that may arise and escalate complaints, conflicts or complex issues that arise to Center Leadership as appropriate
- Assist in the evaluation of student workers as requested by ASTC Leadership Team
- Serve as a liaison for the ASTC at the Vacaville or Vallejo Centers and keep ASTC leadership apprised of operations and happenings at the site
- Maintain program records, files, logs and lists; compile, organize and consolidate data for inclusion in periodic statistical reports as required by ASTC Leadership Team.
- Bring an equity-mindset to all work and attend related workshops/trainings as directed by ASTC Leadership Team and/or College Administration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in English, Social Sciences, or Humanities OR in Math and STEM
or
- Completion of an associate's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in English, Social Sciences, or Humanities OR in Math and STEM
and
- Two (2) years of responsible professional experience, preferably in an educational support program for students at the two-year community college or four-year university level.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience providing timely and responsive services for, and demonstrated understanding of the needs and concerns of, a socio-economically, culturally, and/or ethnically diverse student population
- Experience as a tutor or instructional assistant at the college level is preferred
- Experience working with people with varied academic backgrounds, including those with diverse learning abilities and disabilities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment and software programs including computers and peripheral equipment
- Demonstrate an ability to plan and organize work, including establishing schedules and meeting timelines
- Learn and observe safety regulations per assigned area, assure the security of assigned equipment, materials, and supplies
- Ability to accurately interpret and adhere to relevant policies and regulations
- Ability to complete employment requirements for campus work
