Technology Database Administrator

Under the general direction of the Technology Director, the Database Administrator performs advanced skilled technical and professional work involving the analysis, implementation, administration, and user support of databases, software, and hardware, as well as occasional project lead duties. This position serves as the primary management role to support the Town's database systems and will actively monitor and maintain the system in regards to patches, updates, integrity, and adjustment for growth.

Shift: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

• Monitors operational database environments and performs tuning activities to provide acceptable response times, including end-user access and data communications interfaces
• Performs database administration functions, such as database backups, simple database sizing and turning, and database security administration
• Supports staff in the implementation and use of database software for business applications, queries, reporting, and batch processing
• Troubleshoots operational system and data access problems experienced by users
• Assists in the design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of databases and application systems, including business analysis, to help identify how business applications and databases can be enhanced
• Designs, implements, and supports interfaces between databases and other operating environments
• Creates database tables, queries, and reports
• Assists in the design of logical and physical data models
• Installs and configures software on servers and workstations for appropriate database access
• Tests new versions of server, database, and business applications software before distribution
• Performs installation and migration of application system and database components
• Establishes and maintains database system documentation
• Assists in training users on business application and database use

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

• Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory duties but occasional project leadership duties may be required for specified projects.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

• Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as technical procedures and system operating and maintenance manuals
• Ability to write reports and correspondence
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of users and customers to obtain requirements, explain procedures, and resolve problems

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
• Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

REASONING ABILITY:

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

• Tact and cooperation required
• Communications involve both facts and opinions and coordination such as scheduling meetings or repairs with other Town employees and stakeholders
• May provide leadership and guidance as a work leader

Computer Skills:

• Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices related to database management systems and database management
• Operational knowledge of database management systems, primarily Microsoft SQL Server
• Familiarity with data definition, modeling, and logical design concept systems, including design, implementation, and administration of file servers, software, and desktops
• Familiarity with modern techniques in system analysis and design

Education and Experience

• A bachelor's degree and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

• Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
• Must be 18 yrs old or older
