Overview

What You'll Be Doing

 

Cadmus seeks a Technical Director to join the Planning and Assessment Team of our Energy Services Division (ESD). We support advanced analytic and strategic consulting services to utilities, governments, and non-profit organizations. The ideal candidate must be a highly motivated, intellectually curious, and flexible critical thinker and have experience and interest in energy efficiency, demand response, solar PV, building electrification, electric vehicles, combined heat and power, and integrated resource planning. You will report directly to our Principal of the Planning and Assessment practice and be responsible for leading and overseeing staff within a team of 10 subject matter experts who perform technical quantitative analysis. In this capacity you will manage projects and maintain client relationships, provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior staff, implement strict quality control and quality assurance protocols, meet client deadlines, and compile and communicate results to internal and external stakeholders.

 

As Technical Director you will manage and contribute to strategic planning, forecasting, potential assessments, market research, and data analytics projects and identify and lead new business development opportunities. You will develop analytically advanced methods to estimate demand-side management resource potential and produce detailed client deliverables to inform technical decision making as well as short-term program, and long-term resource forecasting and planning. You will lead projects from start to finish, work with clients to identify their requirements, create integrated teams that combine required technical capabilities with your own professional and industry experience, manage project activities within defined budgets and timelines, and deliver high quality results that exceed client expectations.

 

As part of a highly collaborative and cross-functional Planning and Assessment Team, you will provide services to help clients meet their Clean Energy goals. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent project management skills to lead technical projects, interact with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders, and mentor and manage staff
  • Strong analytical experience and problem-solving skills such as strategic planning, advanced analytics and modeling, integrated resource planning, economic financial modeling, engineering, stakeholder engagement, and/or evaluation
  • Deep understanding of potential assessments and integrated resource plans for electric and gas utilities, and the tools needed to develop them
  • Collaboration and communication capabilities with a strong network and passion for engaging leaders across utilities, local and state governments, and the Clean Energy industry

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience supporting colleagues from a diverse range of projects including energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, electrification (built environment and transportation), decarbonization, energy equity, program planning, evaluation, and market research; presenting exemplary research and findings in reports, client presentations, or analytical models; and help facilitate policy and technical exchanges among decision-makers.

Responsibilities

Potential Assessment, Forecasting and Integrated Resource (IRP) Technical Leadership

  • Supervise and provide technical guidance to engineering and analytic modeling staff on potential assessments, IRP input development, and Planning and Forecasting projects
  • Support and develop analysis (with software tools, e.g., Excel, Python, or R) of gathered data to identify trends; optimize weather or production-normalized models; summarize end-use load profiles; and characterize measure impacts
  • Provide QA/QC of modeled data using analytical techniques with software tools (e.g., Excel, Python, or R)
  • Develop technical approaches for projecting adoption across a range of demand-side resources
  • Support financial cost effectiveness modeling and analysis for demand-side resources
  • Serve as technical support to develop modeling approaches and solutions

Business Development and Project Management

  • Participate in the ideation and execution of business development activities, leverage client relationships to expand work
  • Lead and support development of technical proposals and work scopes for new, expanded, and continuing projects
  • Nurture and build client relationships as a primary point of contact
  • Provide clear and consistent communications on projects and raise concerns or issues
  • Oversee budget tracking, invoicing, project planning, balancing staff resources, and resource management
  • Develop detailed reports; present results, findings, methodologies, and data sources; provide clear, actionable recommendations to clients
  • Review deliverables in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel formats to verify they meet Cadmus standards and exceed client expectations
  • Actively communicate and coordinate project teams, provide constructive feedback and manage expectations
  • Ongoing communication with Cadmus' Energy Division leadership and operations support teams including regarding project health and contract status
  • Communicate professionally (oral and written) with colleagues and clients, in multiple time zones 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area of study such as mechanical or environmental engineering, economics, statistics, mathematics, environmental studies, or other quantitative social science
  • A minimum of 12 years of demonstrated industry experience with utilities, market research, energy efficiency, energy efficiency program planning, and/or resource planning including:
    • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and geographically dispersed project teams
    • Demonstrated understanding of concepts related to energy efficiency, demand reduction, solar generation, electrification, and distributed energy resource potential studies
    • Experience in data analysis and interpretation
    • Familiarity with the development and testing of replicable models at scale
    • Experience with project Planning and budget management (value of $500K to $1M+)
  • Experience in integrated resource planning modeling for utilities (both resource optimization and dispatch simulation)
  • Demonstrable familiarity with supply- and demand-side resource economics
  • Familiarity with project management practices and tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel and Teams) including developing schedules, assigning resources, and budget tracking
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, including setting priorities and adapting to changes in a time-sensitive, deliverable-driven workplace
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to communicate complicated issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and independent decision-making capabilities
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Desired Qualifications

  • Master of Science
  • Prior consulting experience including working independently to make decisions
  • Staff management and development experience
  • Business development (including proposal management and response) experience
  • Demonstrated data management and analytical skills with relational databases and languages such as Python, R, VBA, and SQL

The minimum starting salary for this position is $143,000. The actual salary may be higher and will be determined by several factors, including relevant work experience, education, skills, and market competitiveness.
