Job description

The School of Art seeks two Teaching Assistants for the Spring 2024 semester to work 8 hours per week for an Art History/Critical Theory professor in the School of Art, one Teaching Assistant for each section of "Foundations: Critical Studies".
Each Teaching Assistant would be responsible for the following:

  • Attend the weekly class; take attendance; keep track of student participation and presentations; and keep records of all of the above
  • Scan reading materials
  • Maintain the course Google drive
  • Facilitate small-group in-class discussions with students
  • On students' request, provide one-on-one and small group tutoring
  • On students' request, conduct dry runs for student presentations
  • On students' request, give feedback on student writing assignments
  • Grade papers
  • Prepare classroom before class, and kindly help tidy up afterwards-chairs and tables may need to be put back in place, or the whiteboard may need to be erased.

Course description:
Foundations: Critical Studies; ART 60107
7:00-9:20 PM, Tuesdays (sec A) and Wednesdays (sec B)
Foundations: Critical Studies is a course that expands students' historical knowledge concerning contemporary art and human experience in society. Through critical reading and writing, students will learn how the role of Artistic research contextualizes the conceptual creativity of their studio practice.
This course involves close reading and discussions of a wide range of texts, from foundational theory to short stories, nonfiction, poetry, exhibition reviews, artist interviews, curatorial essays, and excerpts from scholarly monographs. The coursework is organized around a series of interlinked writing projects that deepen studio inquiries, while developing bibliographies in compliance with the Chicago Manual of Style.
Today's visual artist will find that writing is a key to future professional opportunities and that research, writing, and theory are integral parts of Artmaking. This course integrates analytical reading and research-based writing into students' creative process.
Qualifications:
  • BA, MA/MFA, or higher degrees in Art History, English Literature, etc.
  • Prior TA or teaching experience in R1 institutions preferred.
  • Excellent expository writing skills encompassing effective editing and deep knowledge of grammar in compliance with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Impeccable communication skills.
  • Best candidates will demonstrate that they are organized, punctual, and committed to higher education.
