This highly technical position is responsible for planning, engineering, administration, performance, and support of the network, server, storage, and security environments. Work assignments are outlined by a superior, but the employee has the opportunity for independent action in carrying out assignments. Technical assistance and supervision are provided during assignments, and work is checked during the progress and evaluated upon completion by a supervisor.
- Assists in maintaining, upgrading, and monitoring the network, server, storage, and security environments.
- Assists in planning and implementing systems and Network infrastructure additions and upgrades.
- Monitors the wide and local area networks to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Monitors the server and storage environments to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Monitors system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning.
- Works with other department personnel to provide systems and Network resources, including server provisioning, network connectivity, email services, and remote connectivity.
- Prepares performance reports on the wide and local area networks and server performance.
- Provides input on service requests and makes recommendations regarding the feasibility and acceptability of implementation.
- Implements local and wide-area networks, servers, and storage components.
- Selects and implements security tools, policies, and procedures with the City's security team.
- Gathers information as requested for budget analysis, scheduling, specification writing, contract negotiation, report preparation, and presentations.
- Works within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval, and success of System and Network infrastructure changes.
- Liaises with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution.
- Provides timely resolution of trouble and incident requests.
- May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position designated as mission critical.
- Delivery of projects and services within deadlines and financial objectives.
- Development of solid business cases for new services and architecture, including analysis of return on investment.
- Participates in technical training both locally and at out-of-town locations that may require overnight stays.
- Performs related work as required.
- Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college or technical school.
- Four (4) years experience as a technician in a PC and/or network support function.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

- Microsoft Certified System Engineer/HP Certified Systems Administrator/Red Hat Certified Engineer preferred.
- Must be able to attend meetings other than the primary work area.

- Knowledge of fiber optic standards related to proper installation of network-attached devices.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to prepare technical reports.

- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with supervisors, other employees, and the general public.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals for all computer and Network devices used in this system.
- Ability to maintain proficiency on new equipment and devices as the technology evolves.

- Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly, and routine keyboard operation.
- The job risks exposure to heights, toxic/caustic chemicals, traffic, moving machinery, extreme cold or heat, electrical shock, adverse weather conditions, bright/dim light, fumes, noxious odors, dusts, pollen, wet, humid conditions, and extreme noise levels.

- An employee in this position must be able to discriminate between the following colors generated by red/blue/green primary colors at full or half intensity: white, green, yellow, orange, magenta, red, cyan, and blue.
