SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, maintains Swimming Pool and surrounding areas in a clean and orderly condition; maintains Swimming Pool supplies and equipment; operates a variety of maintenance and repair tools and equipment; and maintains current records of maintenance and repair work performed for Swimming Pool.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1.    Brush and vacuum pool; clean and back wash filters and lines; clean tile and wash down pool decks and walks; drain and acid wash pool.

2.    Conduct chemical tests of water and apply chemicals as needed; clean and refill chlorine bins; make chemical adjustments to obtain proper chemical readings.

3.    Perform minor repairs to Swimming Pool and equipment including underwater repairs and servicing; may assist maintenance staff in performing major repairs to equipment.

4.    Maintain Pool Maintenance records and cleaning schedules; maintain inventory and requisition supplies and equipment related to pool use; properly dispose of hazardous chemicals.

5.    Maintain communication with appropriate staff, coaches and outside pool users to determine and properly schedule routine Swimming Pool Maintenance and repair activities.

6.    Secure pool property and equipment; assist in vandalism prevention and reporting.

7.    Chemically treat and maintain the college fountain.

8.    Ensure a safe work environment is maintained; visually check and manual test all emergency eye wash and shower units on campus.

9.    Operate a variety of equipment and hand and small power tools; ensure all equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner.

10.    Assist other maintenance staff in performing assigned duties as necessary.

11.    Perform related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

 

Knowledge of:

•   Operations, services, and activities of a Swimming Pool Maintenance and repair program.

•   Methods, materials, tools and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of Swimming Pools.

•   Basic procedures for chemical tests of water purity and alkalinity.

•   Mathematical principles applicable to Pool Maintenance.

•   Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

•   Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.

 

Ability to:

•   Perform a variety of Pool Maintenance duties.

•   Properly test pool water for appropriate levels of chlorine and alkalinity and make adjustments as necessary.

•   Operate and maintain pool and related equipment in accordance with prescribed standards.

•   Maintain high standards of sanitation and safety in pool operations.

•   Perform routine maintenance on Swimming Pool and surrounding areas.

•   Perform minor mechanical repairs on pool equipment.

•   Safely apply Pool Maintenance chemicals.

•   Perform mathematics applicable to Pool Maintenance.

•   Maintain a variety of records.

•   Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

•   Work with frequent interruptions and/or changes in schedules.

•   Work independently in the absence of supervision.

•   Understand and follow oral and written directions.

•   Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

•   Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by training in the maintenance and cleaning of Swimming Pools.

 

Experience:

One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of Swimming Pools.

 

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license and proof of insurability may be required.

Possession of a Certified Pool Operator certificate is desirable.

Environment: Work is performed in both outdoor and indoor environments; exposure to noise, dust, grease, oil, radiant and electrical energy, toxic chemicals, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders. Occasional exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions.

 

 

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

 

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
