JOB TITLE: SWIM INSTRUCTOR

Nature of Work:
Swim Instructors are responsible for the instruction of swim lessons and the safety of participants.
Supervision Received:
The Swim Instructor reports to the Recreation Supervisor and to the Pool Manager for daily assignments.
Supervision Exercised:
The Swim Instructor will not directly supervise any employees.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prevent accidents through the enforcement of Prospect Heights Park District policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the swimming facilities.
- Demonstrate and teach the swim skills outlined in the swim lesson curriculum.
- Be attentive for possible accidents that may occur in the water or on the deck.
- Know, enforce, and follow all pool rules and policies. Be consistent and polite in your enforcement with participants.
- Report observed or potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions at the pool to the Pool Manager on duty.
- Contact Pool Manager or Recreation Supervisor if assistance in maintaining discipline of participants is needed.

- Maintain an acceptable appearance through personal hygiene, clean uniforms, etc.
- Thoroughly complete all incident and accident reports.
- Provide first aid to guests and staff members, complete first aid log, and report any supply shortages to the pool manager on duty.
- Attend and participate in two hours per month of REQUIRED in-service training (6 hours for the 8-week season) and all staff meetings as scheduled.
- Learn and follow all provisions of the Aquatic Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Perform other related pool duties as required by the Pool Manager or Supervisor of Recreation.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be able to swim, using the front crawl and/or the breaststroke, without stopping for 50 yards
- Must be able to swim 10 feet underwater, retrieve a 10lb brick from a depth of 5 feet, and return to the surface
- Must be able to exit the pool without requiring the use of a ladder
- Must be able to complete & pass CPR/AED, first aid, and oxygen administration certification, including written exams and practical skills
Marginal Functions:
- Set up of extra pool furniture and supplies as needed.
- Participate in pool activities as needed.
Psychological Considerations:
- The Swim Instructor has responsibility for the safety of the swim participants in the pool and on the pool deck.
- The Swim Instructors may have to work under stressful situations when first aid or CPR is required.
Physiological Considerations:
- The Swim Instructor works in a summer climate.
- The Swim Instructor must be able to respond quickly and accurately.
Environmental Considerations:
The Swim Instructor will be exposed to the weather conditions, which can include cold, rain, wind, and extreme heat.
Cognitive Considerations:
- The Swim Instructor must be able to follow directions from the supervisor.
- The Swim Instructor must be able to give and receive directions from co-workers.
- The Swim Instructor must use good safety awareness and judgment.
- The Swim Instructor must be aware of potential life-threatening conditions.
