JCC Chicago is on the lookout for safety conscious individuals who love teaching others new skills. Our Swim Instructors/Lifeguards are looking to develop career-building skills such as leadership, communication, problem-solving and relationship management abilities. Dates:
Employee Orientation: June 10 – 14, 2024 (Times TBD)
Camp Dates: June 17 - August 2, 2024 (no camp June 19, July 4 and July 5)
Camp Hours: 9:00am – 3:00pm daily
Key Essential Job Duties:
- Teach swimming lessons using American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program to campers from 3-years-old through rising 7th graders.
- Certified lifeguards will guard from the pool deck while not actively instructing campers. Swim instructors focus primarily on teaching swim lessons.
- Document campers’ swim progress and write regular swim reports.
- Attend and participate in the required safety trainings.
- Prevent and reduce accidents and injuries.
- Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices, or conditions to Aquatics Director.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Maintain tot docks, pool noodles, and other pool toys/accessories. This includes cleaning, storing, and repairing as needed.
- Organize and maintain pool area and locker rooms.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children ages 3 – 12 years old.
- Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children understand.
- Consistently demonstrate and reinforce the values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.
- Know the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. Prevent, circumvent, and deal with problem behaviors appropriately and effectively.
- Maintain a sense of calm and perspective with physical and mental alertness during stressful times.
- Ability to run up to 100 yards (in the case of an emergency).
- Able to lift/move children up to 45 lbs.
- Demonstrate physical stamina and agility required to be mobile for long periods throughout the day.
- Stand for long periods of time and be able to actively engage physically with children.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Staff must be 16 years of age or older.
- Demonstrate proficiency of swim skills in accordance with American Red Cross standards
- Some high school experience required.
- Must have a great attitude.
- Must enjoy working with children.
- Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Required Certificates/Licenses, Lifeguards only:
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
- Lifeguard certificate training is offered in the Spring to those not already certified.
Compensation: JCC Apachi Day Camps offer a great stipend, bonus opportunities and a fun work environment! This is a stipend position and pay varies based on experience.
