Job description

This position is accountable for the safety an accuracy to conduct proper pre-survey equipment assessments, various field operations, collecting and managing data, and properly maintaining survey and ancillary equipment. Conducting these duties involves maintaining proper field logs, troubleshooting survey and ancillary equipment, contacting and professionally communicating with clients, coworkers, as well as the public in a manner reflecting the best regards of the Company.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follows directions from Survey Party Chief, Survey Superintendent, Survey Engineer, Captain, etc. to ensure all data/surveys are conducted safely, accurately, and in compliance with the designated job plans and correct specifications of the project.
  • Performs assigned Hydrographic and Inland surveys of Marine and Construction projects and maintain quality of collected data.
  • Conducts quality control surveys for each assigned project and forward the collected data to the office promptly.
  • Locates, plots, and properly marks dredge and leveed disposal areas, coordinate cross-sections of both land and water along with recording and plotting the collected data.
  • Performs pre-departure checklists, JSA's, and other required forms of record keeping accurately.
  • Assumes responsibility for the proper maintenance of all survey equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports appropriate for the needs of the project and future retention.

  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
  • All employees, current and former, must maintain confidentiality by not disclosing to others any confidential, proprietary or trade secret information belonging to the Company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Prefer prior hands-on work experience in heavy civil or marine construction. Working knowledge of Project Construction, Principles of Surveying, Engineering & Project Standards, Surveying Software, State Law regarding Plats, Property Lines and Survey Monuments, and Safety & Environmental Compliance is preferred but not required. Clean driving record and a valid Texas Driver's license.

In addition, Preferred:

  • Knowledge of mathematics, survey computer programs, and survey computations applicable to the job.
  • Knowledge of the use of mechanical drawing instruments or survey computer programs.
  • Knowledge of the nomenclature and symbols of drafting.
  • Knowledge of surveying instruments and equipment and their use and care.
  • Ability to carry out written and oral directions.
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations accurately and record results legibly.
  • Ability to maintain survey equipment and consumables inventory.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance on survey and ancillary equipment.
  • Ability to prepare, set-up, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot computer and survey equipment.
  • Ability to assist, conduct, and evaluate transportation, data collection, recording, and processing of multiple specifications relating to the proper applications in the marine construction environment.
  • Knowledge of vessel/boat operations and navigation in various waterways.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, follow instructions and comply with Company rules and policies.

The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD's) or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.

Must be qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites.

In addition, Surveyors must also be capable of:

  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Performing repetitive movement by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hand, and back in performance work.
  • Climbing vertical ladders to heights 40'-50'.
  • Working in confined spaces and working at elevated heights.
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes and adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure.
  • Traveling and possibly being away from home for extended times.
  • Tolerance of sea sickness.
  • Working long hours.
  • Being flexible.
  • Working well with others.
  • Being physically and mentally fit to work.
  • Being able to deal with stress.
  • Being able to communicate clearly, accurately, and professionally.
  • Being coachable.
  • Being prepared.
  • Being able to make decisions.
