Provides technical expertise and advice on complex surveying projects and/or performs specialized surveying work under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor or licensed Professional Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Survey Specialist II
- Conducts trigonometric and conventional leveling surveys, including 3-wire techniques, to determine elevations.
- Ensures safety equipment and traffic control devices are set up correctly.
- Meets with property owners and utility companies to brief them on procedures when surveying near or on their property.
- Monitors and reviews work performance of contracted survey work.
- Operates survey instruments such as level, transit, theodolite, electronic distance meter, total survey station and data collector
- Reads and interprets survey maps and construction plans.
- Sets up instruments; moves survey equipment/instruments as required.
- Takes field notes, verifies accuracy of field notes, performs necessary calculations, uses software programs to determine coordinates, draws plots and documents work in the field diary.
- Uses a variety of surveying software and related hardware.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Survey Specialist III
In addition to the duties listed above
- Performs audits and quality control/quality assurance of projects.
- Trains and instructs other survey personnel.
- Coordinates with and assists other sections as requested.
- Performs drafting and design work.
- Secures maps, plans and other information for survey projects.
Survey Specialist IV
In addition to the duties listed above
- Conducts monthly safety meetings.
- Obtains, processes, and analyzes raw field survey data collected from electronic survey equipment and GPS.
- May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage
Minimum Qualifications:
All Levels
- Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
- Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent
- Certification as Surveyor in Training (SIT) by the State of Texas plus one (1) year surveying experience may substitute for experience.
Survey Specialist II
- Experience: 2 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience.
Survey Specialist III
- Experience: 3 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience.
Survey Specialist IV
- Experience: 4 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
