Job description

Survey Specialist I-II: Provides technical expertise and advice on surveying projects and performs specialized surveying work under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor or licensed Professional Engineer. Work usually requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Survey Specialist III-IV: Provides technical expertise and advice on complex surveying projects and performs specialized surveying work under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor or licensed Professional Engineer. Work usually requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Operates survey instruments such as level, GNSS equipment, total survey station, and data collector.
  • Takes field notes, verifies accuracy of field notes, performs necessary calculations, uses software programs to determine coordinates, draws plots and documents work in the field diary.
  • Conducts trigonometric and conventional leveling surveys, including 3-wire techniques, to determine elevations.
  • Performs deed research and interprets survey maps, construction plans, plat maps and legal descriptions.
  • Determines, coordinates, and sets benchmarks or locates those set by previous surveys.
  • Collects global positioning system (GPS) data and converts GPS data into GIS datasets and collects, prepares, digitizes, and codes spatial data into GIS format.
  • Converts CAD and other map formats into ArcGIS formats.
  • Conducts GPS research and development surveys.
  • Monitors and reviews work performance of contracted survey work including accuracy and adherence to standards, and ensuring safety equipment and traffic control devices are set up correctly.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

Survey Specialist I: 1 year surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience. Certification as Surveyor in Training (SIT) by the State of Texas may substitute for experience.
Survey Specialist II: 2 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience. Certification as Surveyor in Training (SIT) by the State of Texas plus one (1) year surveying experience may substitute for experience.
Survey Specialist III: 3 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience. Certification as Surveyor in Training (SIT) by the State of Texas plus one (1) year surveying experience may substitute for experience.
Survey Specialist IV: 4 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience. Certification as Surveyor in Training (SIT) by the State of Texas plus two (2) years surveying experience may substitute for experience.

  • Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

    • Familiarity with Trimble total station and GNSS-GPS equipment as well as applicable computer software, hardware, programming techniques and languages.
    • Using surveying tools, equipment, and instruments.
    • Performing design/drafting work and preparing plans, maps, and surveys.
    • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
    • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations.
    • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
    • Map cartography, interpretation, coordinate systems, and projections.
    • Surveying/mapping methods, materials, and publication procedures.
    • Communicating technical information effectively.
    • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing and walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
