Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Certified Surgical Technician is a member of the nursing staff and performs the instrument technician role during surgical procedures. Assists in providing care to surgical patients according to Marshall Medical Center's (MMC's) standards of practice. Creates and maintains a sterile field, passing surgical instruments to the surgeon, disassembling the sterile field upon completion of the surgical procedure, returning the instrumentation to the decontamination room in the appropriate manner, and assisting with turning over the operating room and setting up for the next patient. Assists with maintaining the par levels of stock items throughout the department and maintains good public relations by interacting with patients, visitors, physicians and other staff members in a friendly and professional manner. The Certified Surgical Technician assists in attaining department goals by functioning in other areas within the department, as requested. Ensures the safe handling of infectious material to protect all patients and employees.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Establishes and maintains the ability to perform technical skills to ensure appropriate patient care.
- Performs job duties to meet the age-specific needs of the patients and to provide age-appropriate care, adjusting interactions with patients to meet specific needs and situations of each patient.
- Participates in meeting departmental staffing needs (daily staffing, standby and callback) to provide adequate coverage for all shifts.
- Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant other's rights/responsibilities and legal issues as identified within the institution to maintain patients' privacy.
- Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility, self-validation and accountability for own professional practice and development to gain personal and professional development.
- Promotes quality improvement within the department in order to attain departmental and hospital goals.

- Adheres to policies and procedures of the department and organization.
- Determines priorities in workload and completes projects in an accurate and timely manner.
- When on call, incumbent must be able to arrive to hospital and report to duty within 30 minutes of request.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred.
- Completion of an approved Operating Room Technician (ORT) course required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Knowledge:
- Computer familiarity required.
