Surgical Pacu Nurse (Part Time)

Registered Nurse – PACU (Part-time 10-30 hours per week)

JOB SUMMARY: The PACU nurse independently makes assessments and provides care with assigned patients in the Outpatient Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. The PACU nurse will identify any standards of care needs and report them to the OR Manger.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Recover patients on surgery days and help with pre-ops and phone calls on non-surgery days.

• Utilize acquired knowledge and skills related to perioperative nursing care, procedures, and equipment in order to provide safe, individualized patient care.
• Implements safe, competent and efficient patient care within policies, procedures and standards to post anesthesia patients regardless of complexity.
• Assesses the behavioral and physiological status of the post anesthesia patient population, utilizing interview, observation and physical exam and other available information.
• Utilizes resources to initiate/complete the nursing process for patients with new or unfamiliar problems.
• Recognizes potential problems and sets priorities according to change in patient status and unusual occurrences.
• Plans patient care to facilitate discharge in a timely manner.
• Preserves privacy and dignity of patients.
• Maintains patient/family confidentiality.
• Advocates for patients in discussion with other health care workers and/or significant others.
• Complete appropriate records/documentation.
• Involves patient/family in plan of care, incorporating their belief system.
• Clearly explains discharge instructions to patients and family members.
• Notifies anesthesiologist or surgeon immediately if issues arise with patient in the PACU
• Observe infection control procedures to minimize the risk of cross-contamination between surgical patients and staff. Practice universal precautions at all times.
• Assist with dressings and transfer of patient from operating room table to recovery chairs/carts.
• Help as needed with patient and accompany patient to post procedure area; when OR staff are unable to transport to the pre/post area from the OR.
• Assist with the signing out at the beginning of the day and the returning at the end of the day any narcotics from the anesthesia provider. Count and verify narcotics and waste as stated per policy.
• Relieve other nurses and or CMA for breaks and lunch as needed and/or assigned by the OR manager/designee.
• Demonstrate ability to work effectively in demanding working conditions.
• Establish and maintain open communication with co-workers, team members, and OR Manager to assist in smooth execution of the daily schedule.
• Demonstrate personal characteristics and interpersonal skills to work closely with many team members at the same time.
• Perform other site-specific duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENT

• Pre-Op, Intra-op or PACU experience highly preferred
• ICU, Trauma or ER experience
• Licenses & Certifications RN
• State of Illinois RN licensure
• CPR
• ACLS required to be obtained within 3 months of hire date

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Possess good communication skills and the ability to maintain interactive/interpersonal relationships
• Possess a good working knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and legal aspects of nursing, and techniques, care and use of equipment used in an ambulatory surgery center setting
• Available and willingness to change hours as staffing needs require
• Adaptable to varied and quickly changing duties without requiring detailed or repeated instructions
• Must have ability to establish priorities in fulfillment of duties

• Ability to prioritize tasks

Hours: Will vary, but can generally expect shifts Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday between the hours of 7am - 7:00pm depending on surgical schedule. PACU RN must stay until patient recovers and is able to go home safely.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $42.00 - $47.00 per hour
