POSITION SUMMARY:
This Supervisor of Special Education (SOSE) will be responsible for managing and directing educational programming in Whitney Hall School in collaboration with the Principal and VP of Education. The SOSE establishes educational goals, policies and procedures for the program. The SOSE works as a member of a team with the management of The Children’s Center of Hamden. The SOSE is responsible to the VP of Education. The SOSE will also be in regular contact with both public and private agencies. The SOSE will supervise the teachers, teacher assistants, and direct care workers of the Whitney Hall School as well as oversee the selection of teachers and the staff of Whitney Hall School in collaboration with the Principal and VP. This individual shall be aware of and sensitive to the cultural diversity of the client population. This employee is expected to perform other assigned duties.
Accountable and responsible for the following results:
- Provides administrative direction and oversight of the educational mission of The Children’s Center of Hamden and its service delivery.
- Oversees the hiring, training, scheduling and disciplining of the certified and non-certified staff.
- Oversees quality improvement activities for Whitney Hall School and closely monitors, and when needed, develops strategies to improve utilization of the Clinical Day School component.
- Maintains compliance with all State Department of Education standards for Private Special Education Programs including requirements for Educators.
- Ensures that staff evaluations are completed yearly in keeping with requirements of the State of Connecticut.
- Partners with the Management Team at The Children’s Center
- Ensures continuous assessment of systems to ensure that efforts to provide a safe environment are coordinated and effective.
- Directly responsible to ensure adequate evaluation and implementation of Agency's policies and procedures as they relate to client safety and Whitney Hall School.
- Serves as facilitator in defining current and future planning needs in addressing educational programming at The Children’s Center of Hamden.
- Ensures active participation in Planning and Placement Team Meetings as required.
- Serves as the Center liaison with the CT State Department of Education, the Department of Children and Families, etc. for purposes of defining and ensuring compliance with all educational practices and regulations.
- Ensures that programming in Whitney Hall School reflects sensitivity and awareness regarding cultural diversity as it relates to the client population.
- In collaboration with Principal and VP, ensures that Whitney Hall School has policies and procedures that govern the behaviors of staff so that services provided are culturally competent.
- Completes thorough review of all PPT documents and testing data being presented at PPT.
- Conducts/Chairs all PPT for residential and day school students. Estimated: 150-200 meetings per year.
- Maintains all Special Education files to ensure state compliance.
- Reviews all student data prior to being sent to LEAs and stakeholders.
- Participates in teacher evaluation and supervision with administrators.
- Ensures accurate baseline and continual assessments are taken to monitor student progress.
- Coordinates daily classroom meetings.
- Runs professional development trainings on designated PD days and Friday afternoons.
- Coordinates student teaching/internships.
- Coordinates evaluation and supervision trainings and goal setting for teachers.
- In collaboration with head teachers, develops and implements curriculum.
- Completes TCS data submission annually
- In collaboration with school managerial staff and administration, provides training and supervision for Teaching Assistants and Direct Care Workers.
- Leads Special Projects assigned by senior management.
- Reviews teacher lesson plans weekly.
- Other duties that may from time to time be assigned by the Director of Education.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Five or more years of experience as an Administrator in an educational setting, preferably in a Special Education program.
- Must possess administrative and managerial abilities, and know how to plan, implement and actualize education goals.
Licensure/Certifications:
- In accordance with Connecticut State Board of Education requirements. Certification in School Administration and Supervision (Intermediate Supervision – Endorsement 092) and Special Education or Pupil Services.
