THE DEPARTMENT

Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP) aims to make a positive difference in the lives of non-traditional students through high quality programs and services that promote access, equity, and educational opportunities in support of student learning and success. The department oversees various programs and service areas that support underserved populations that are primarily first generation, low-income, underrepresented students such as, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Renaissance Scholars (RS), and Undocumented Students Services (USS).


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Planning and Implementation

  • Assist the Coordinator in the planning, implementation, and tracking of the Summer Bridge and Transfer Bridge programs.
  • Assist with daily operations of the Summer Bridge program components and logistics (e.g., facilitation of roundtables, workshops, program tracking, opening events, study time, meals, conference services, closing events, etc.).
  • Assist with daily operations and program planning, development, and implementation of the Summer and Transfer Bridge program components and logistics (e.g., securing speakers, rooms, updating the program model, program application process, marketing, information sessions, facilitations of presentations, etc.).
  • Assist Transition Programs with online platforms: Zoom, MS Team, Canva, etc.
  • Assist with enforcing EOP program, university housing, and campus policies and procedures as they relate to emergency protocols and university health and safety standards and report them to the Transition Programs Coordinator.
  • Assist in making phone calls, following up with students, and compiling reports throughout the Transition Programs.

Student Engagement

  • Provide professional assistance to Summer Bridge and Transfer Bridge Program participants and convey Cal Poly Pomona, EOP, SB, TB, policies and procedures to all.
  • Apply student development theory principles when working with students and student leaders to foster a strong sense of belonging and build community.
  • Meet with students (as needed), regarding emotional, behavioral, or academic concerns by coordinating initial meetings with student by utilizing interpersonal, fact gathering, and analytical skills to determine the severity of the situation and respond accordingly. Notify Coordinator of issue and action plan and make proper referrals.
  • Provide direction and guidance to student assistants and support to the student leadership team and Assistant Coordinator of EOP Transition Programs as needed.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior during programs through role modeling and overall daily interaction with participants.

Assessment and Data Analysis

  • Assist with assessment implementation, reporting, and administrative operations for Summer and Transfer Bridge, including creating a summary
  • report/presentation of the results for Summer and Transfer Bridge.
  • Assist with the gathering and reporting of activity data, and prepare debriefing notes as part of Transition Program wrap-up activities.
  • Observe student’s responses to programming and take note for possible improvements during the programs.

Participate in Meetings, Committees, and Professional Development Activities

  • Meet regularly with Lead(s); follow up on action items as appropriate.
  • Participate in SSEP and unit area(s) staff meetings and assigned committee meetings.
  • Participate in department in-service training and professional development activities as appropriate and needed to better serve SSEP student populations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one (1) year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • Equivalent amounts of graduate level job‑related education may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior.
  • The ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Enrollment in a Higher Education/Students Affairs Master's program (or related field) is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience working with foster youth, undocumented, low-income, first-generation and diverse student populations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including phone and in-person, emails, texts, etc.; communicate and listen attentively.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to cultivate strong interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, and staff; and work effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Must protect the confidentiality of student personal information and comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Must comply with all university procedures and policies; interpret CSU admissions and financial aid guidelines.
  • Technology savvy; proficiency in Microsoft applications.
  • Uphold personal qualities of integrity, flexibility, and compassion.
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; and the techniques and methods of interviewing.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the APC bargaining unit 4, the CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the following site, https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/Classification-Standards.aspx. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the following site: https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/salary-schedule-documents.aspx. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is minimum $4,066 and maximum $5,752 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.
