Job Summary:

Teach classes during the six week summer program in the Erie County Youth Detention Center.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. To provide students with a program that will enable them to reach their fullest academic, physical, social-emotional, psychological, behavioral, and intellectual potential.

  2. Assesses students, both informally and formally, in order to provide a classroom program.

  3. Provides an education program for students consistent with state education mandates and the program's goals and requirements.

  4. Establishes a classroom environment that provides for the student's academic needs including specific systems of motivation to students.

  5. Assists and counsels students in making realistic assessment of their abilities in establishing educational and/or occupational goals.

  6. Keeps attendance records and other reports/records pertinent to the program.

  7. Provides, when warranted, continuous consultation and/or management outside of the classroom to appropriate personnel.

  8. Confers with professional staff members, building level administrators, and supervisors regarding the students educational, social/emotional, psychological, behavioral, and intellectual potential.

  9. Participate, when appropriate, in continuous professional growth and development related to the field of teaching and/or specific area(s) of expertise.

  10. Assists other professional staff members in promoting a team approach to solving problems that occur in the six (6) week program

  11. Follows the rules and expectations of teaching in a Youth Detention Center.

  12. Any other duty as assigned by your Supervisor.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of the specific curriculum content to deliver at appropriate instructional levels.

  • Knowledge of principles of educating youth with mental health and/or emotional and behavioral challenges.

  • Knowledge of Individual Education Programs

  • Knowledge of the principals of student management and supervision

  • Knowledge of the principals of files and records management

  • Knowledge of trends and practices in adolescent education

  • Skills in assessing, evaluating, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks, projects and demands.

  • Skills in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments

  • Skills in assessing, analyzing, identifying and recommending solutions to problems

  • Skills in producing written reports for internal and external audiences

  • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, representatives of other governmental agencies and others having business with the courts of Erie County.

  • Skills in computer operations utilizing a variety of commonly used and specialized applications

Minimum Education Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in Education

Minimum Experience Required:

Previous experience in a High School classroom preferred

License/Registration/ Certifications Required:

New York State Teaching certification for a specified teaching discipline (English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and/or Special Education, etc.)

Training Requirements:

OLVHS’ New Hire Orientation

Physical Requirements:

May be required to lift and/or carry heavy, bulky items, equipment, supplies and/or other materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
