Summer School Program Teacher Assistant

Department: Summer School

Reports to: Assistant Site Coordinator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Supervises: 0

Pay: $15.00 hr Seasonal

Summary: The Summer School Teacher Assistant will be responsible for providing support to the Summer School Teacher, and interacting with K-2nd grade students. Teacher assistants promote the personal, educational, and social development of young people between the ages of 5 and 8. Programs aim to engage young people, redress inequalities, value opinions, and empower individuals to take action on issues affecting their lives, including health, education, unemployment, and the environment, by developing positive skills and attitudes.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Participating in lesson planning sessions with teachers, the Summer School Director, and the Site Coordinator.
  • Assisting with lessons under the Teacher's guidance, leading small groups or individual instruction and discussions, and reviewing classwork.
  • Organizing the classroom and teaching materials, monitoring the classroom during lessons, and minimizing distractions and disruptions.
  • Supervising students in and out of the classroom.
  • Attending to students' physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs.
  • Helping Teachers and students with extracurricular activities and school functions.
  • Solve conflicts, maintain confidentiality, and remain open to various ideas and viewpoints
  • Performing clerical duties, such as tracking student attendance, typing, filing, photocopying, and grading tests.
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing regarding any concerns about students, programming, etc
  • Develop strong relationships with coworkers, participants, families, and school personnel to build trust.
  • Work in a non-judgemental way with a diverse range of people, maintaining a respectful and inclusive culture.
  • Attend weekly/biweekly team meetings and be prepared to participate.
  • Must participate in Mandated Reporter training and must follow expectations and guidelines.
  • Learn important GCI history; i.e. services provided by agency departments.
  • Assist with morning drop-off of students
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bilingual English and Spanish (oral and written) preferred

Work Environments

This job operates in a school and professional environment. This role continually uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Guadalupe Centers serves a diverse population, including children, adolescents, and adults, who may have mental or behavioral health problems. Consequently, all GC staff must demonstrate appropriate daily behavior, appropriate expression of emotions, and appropriate role modeling. This position may also be exposed to the outdoors during the summer months and may be exposed to heat, sun, and other factors. This position will interact with children and may be exposed to noises daily.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk, or hear. The employee is also frequently required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. The employee must sometimes push items of 45 lbs. such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, and work output. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
