To provide outstanding and safe on-water experiences by creating a balanced presentation of nature, history education and paddling technique.
About Outside Hilton Head
From our humble beginnings in 1979 as a windsurfing school operating off the beach in Sea Pines Plantation, Outside Brands has grown into the most comprehensive outfitter in the Southeast region. Our programs include kayak nature tours, kayak fishing, Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) instruction, surfing lessons, boat-based dolphin tours, charter fishing, private boat charters and rentals, tours of Historic Daufuskie Island and Old Town Bluffton, as well as children's and teen's camps. Our Outdoor Experiential Learning Outpost, located on the company owned Page Islands, provides a unique setting for customized family adventure activities, as well as our corporate Team building and Leadership programs. One of the newest and fastest growing areas of the company is the Destination Management/Event Planning division, providing full DMC services to include transportation, activities, team building, event production, entertainment, décor, events and amenities. In addition to the multitude of outdoor activities Outside Brands provides 365 days a year, the company also has two retail locations, located in Shelter Cove and Palmetto Bluff, and operations based at the Westin Resort and Sonesta Resort on HHI. The core staff of Outside Brands consists of about 75 individuals who work full- and part-time year- round. During the summer months our staff expands to over 130 employees.
Responsibilities
All applicants must be CPR certified. Fully qualified applicants possess a strong desire to work outside, are able to provide exceptional customer service, and seek to become part of a dynamic team. All applicants must know how to swim.
In addition to kayak nature tour guiding, candidates must be adept:
- with answering phones, taking reservations, connecting calls with the appropriate staff member, and providing guests with program information
- with utilizing recreation software for reservations
- selling company programs and activities on the phone and in person
- following proper office procedures for operational record keeping and other paperwork procedures commonly used in daily operations
- general clerical duties including photocopying, fax and mailing
- all other duties as assigned
This person must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a strong desire to learn, and possess the ability to interact with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner. A positive, humble, friendly, and team-oriented attitude is necessary. High School diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of 2 years' experience in kayaking or related field. Must speak fluent English.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Stay up-to-date on local history, nature, and wildlife topics.
- Maintain all paddlesports equipment to the highest standard.
- Fill out trip paperwork per company policy.
- Keep a current stock of all guide box materials.
- Be prepared for a trip at any time, keeping uniform and safety equipment at hand.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early to prepare for trips.
- Maintain current First Aid/CPR Credentials.
- Develop a passion in our customers for our local area as well as kayaking/stand-up paddleboarding.
- Frequently standing up or moving within and outside the facility
- Carrying or lifting items weighing up to 45lbs
- Proficient PC computer skills
- Communicating with customers, employees, and third parties
- Use a keyboard to generate correspondence, reports, etc.
- Handling objects, products, and computer equipment
