Summer Forestry Technician

Overview
Humboldt Redwood Company is seeking Summer Forestry Technicians! The position offers an hourly rate of $25.00 and includes benefits.
The Summer Forestry Technician position is an approximate 10-week HRC Forestry position tailored to the working needs of the forestry department, and the forestry interests of the successful applicant including potentially forest science applications such as wildlife surveys, geology and hydrology. The position reports to an Area Manager and typically involves technician assistance with some or all the following activities including timber harvest plan preparation, timber marking, timber cruising, and road inventories. Dependent upon the successful applicants interests and the current need of the company, the position may also involve assistance with forest science department activities such as Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) surveys, geologic investigations, and hydrology.
Humboldt Redwood Company, LLC (HRC) located in Scotia, CA was formed in July 2008 through the reorganization of the former Pacific Lumber Company and related entities. Humboldt Redwood consists of forestry as well as lumber manufacturing and distribution operations. Humboldt Redwoods forestry operations include approximately 327 square miles (209,300 acres) of coast redwood and Douglas-fir forestlands. Qualifications

• Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license
• Remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles, trucks and large 4-wheel drive vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
• High school education required.
• Experience including familiarity with safe capturing and handling of small mammals a plus.
• Familiarity with concepts in forest ecology, and wildlife management techniques and security procedures a plus.
• Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines, reports potentially unsafe conditions.
• The position may require night work and irregular schedule.
• This position requires the following personal protective equipment: above ankle boots, eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, hard hat, and ATV helmet.
• Knowledge of GPS, working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• The employee must be able to safely navigate steep and difficult terrain, including strenuous hiking for approximately six hours per day.
• While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to effectively communicate with others.
• The employee is required to sit, stand, and walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Climbing and/or crawling through steep and brushy terrain may be required for one to two hours per day.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds two to three times per day.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; ability to identify northern California birds and trees.
• The employee must have ability to use directional compass and topographical maps, and/or GPS.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep and difficult terrain.
• As the employee is often required to use four-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.
• Position will require night work and irregular schedule.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• This position requires the following personal protective equipment: above ankle boots, eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, hard hat, and ATV helmet.
• knowledge of GPS, working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook, or similar software programs

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

• Position has travel requirements of a local nature (within 100 miles one way) usually by pickup truck.
