This position is subject to the lnteragency Fire Program (IFPM) Standard and Guide selective placement factors for a Prescribed Fire Fuels Specialist (Low Complexity). This position requires the following qualifications - Currency Not Required:

- 90 Day Prior Firefighting Experience Requirement (resume must show to and from dates and a description of work performed). The Department of the Interior defines wild land firefighting experience as on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wild land fire. This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days.
- Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fire: Wildfire - An unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires. Prescribed Fire - Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience.
Specialized Experience:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
For the GS-9: Performing prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding and mop-up. Monitors fire behavior, fire effects, and fire weather on prescribed fires. Collecting fire data such as fuel loading, tree stand density, fuel moisture, maps projects, weather, and maintains records. Operating, maintaining and making minor repairs to chainsaws. Using specialized firing equipment (e.g. fusees, drip torches, flares, and terra torch). Performing wildland fire suppression activities. OR Education: Master's degree in a directly related field, or at least 2 years of progressive graduate education leading to such a degree. OR A combination of experience and education meeting the requirements.
For the GS-8: Assisting the Module Leader or other senior staff in the technical and administrative supervision of a fuels module. Assisting in the planning and implementing of project assessments which determine the presence or absence of hazardous wildland fuels. Reviewing project plans and making recommendations. Identifying and recommending options for training needs to support prescribed fire and fuels management programs. Participating in preparedness reviews, proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and after action reviews. OR Education: Master's degree in a directly related field, or at least 2 years of progressive graduate education leading to such a degree. OR A combination of experience and education meeting the requirements.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is a SECONDARY/Administrative fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure this office has enough information to determine your retirement status to ensure you do not lose benefits(normally through submission of your SF-50). YOU MUST LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN A PRIMARY POSITION.
Physical Demands: Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.
Work Environment: Work is perform both in-doors (office) and out-of-doors (field work). Office conditions require long periods of sitting, working with computers and general lifting, and bending and reaching. Field conditions are performed in various conditions and often involve steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Personnel must adjust and cope with exposure to adverse weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. The employee may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.). Work may require travel by fixed- wing or rotor-wing aircraft.Education: If using education to qualify, you must submit copies of all transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university.
