Job Title:                      Fisheries Biologist II

Reports to:                   Environmental Stewardship Director

Position Summary:  This position works with our Environmental Stewardship team. The primary objectives of this position are to conduct culturally centered fish research and/or restoration projects including managing project logistics, data collection, data management and research reports as well as conduct baseline water quality data collection for assisting in achieving the CVTC mission of ‘helping our citizens to thrive.’ This is a full-time position (40 hours per week), with benefits, including paid leave, 15 paid holidays, flexible cafeteria, health insurance and/or 401(k) retirement plan options.

Here’s What you Can Expect on a Typical Day: This is a year-round position with responsibilities adapted for the seasons. In the winter months you will attend and present at statewide and local environmental/fisheries meetings about environmental/fisheries policies. You will work on grant writing projects and summer research reports. You will prepare for the upcoming field work season, ordering supplies, hiring technicians, and coordinating field activities. Plan and conduct environmental education at CVTC’s Ya Ne Dah Ah School. Learn from Tribal Elders about historic fishing locations. A classic summer day will include field work, regardless of the weather. You’ll have a team of one or more Fisheries Technicians to help you perform whatever fieldwork is planned for the day. In addition to fieldwork, you will assist the Fish Passage program. This could be doing longitudinal profiles/cross section measurements or reference reach drawings for creeks that pass through bad culverts, talking with landowners, minnow trapping above and below culverts, or whatever else that program needs help with.

Here’s What We’re Looking For:

• Someone with over 3 years of relevant experience implementing fish research projects is preferred. We are willing to train CNV Tribal Citizens.
• Someone with good working knowledge of fishery management practices to include habitat requirements, behavior of fish, fish population dynamics, limnology, stream ecology, taxonomy, diseases of fish, and aquatic insects and fishery research methods is required.
• Someone with a Master’s degree is preferred as the writing and data analysis skills required of the position are of an advanced college level. College courses preferred include Biology, Fish Behavior, Fish Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Hydrology, GIS and other environmental sciences.
• Someone with at least 6 months of experience supervising other fisheries staff. We will provide training.
• Someone with excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Someone with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, time management skills, excellent verbal, proficient with MS Office Suite and written communication skills.
• A valid Alaska Driver’s License is required with the ability to be insured by CVTC’s vehicle insurance policy to drive our vehicles.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Standing or moving for long periods of time. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds at times.
• Wading and working in moving water up to waist deep, walking on slippery surfaces with fast-moving water.
• Floating on an inflatable raft, potentially for several days, including camping next to a river.
• Travel in and outside of Alaska to attend/present at trainings, conferences, or workshops.
